From Our Research Team:

A Beautiful USA-made Axe That's Loaded with Tone

Get the best of Line 6's Variax modeling in this gorgeous USA-made guitar. First and foremost, the Line 6 JTV-69 USA is an amazing custom-built USA-made guitar. Built to the specifications of the world-renowned master luthier James Tyler, the JTV-69 USA sports a magnificent double-cutaway alder body and an ultra-fast bolt-on maple neck. Unlike the Variax models of the past, the JTV-69 USA features a set of real custom-wound pickups. These pickups (arranged in the H/S/S configuration that's popular for rock and metal) have been designed by James Tyler and built to his specifications. So, even without the Variax technology onboard, the JTV-69 USA is a custom-quality instrument on its own.

Top-of-the-line Variax technology adds serious playing power to the James Tyler Variax JTV-69 USA. This system lets you instantly reshape your sound and retune your guitar with only the turn of a dial or two, letting you instantly change your tuning and/or guitar model. Just twist the tone-selector dial on the JTV-69 USA and jump from a 6-string solidbody to a 12-string acoustic, or from a bold humbucker configuration to a snappy single-coil setup. And applying alternate tunings, such as drop tuning or open tuning, is just as easy. The JTV-69 USA has a second selector wheel up at the neck that lets you instantly switch among 11 tunings without altering either the feel or the tension of your strings. With the JTV-69 USA in your hands, no style or sound is out of reach.

What's even cooler about the JTV-69 USA is that you're not locked into a predefined set of tunings and models. Line 6's Workbench software (a free download from Line 6's website) lets you create custom models on your computer and upload them to your JTV-69 USA via its built-in USB port. Define your body style, dimensions, pickup configuration, etc. - the combinations and possibilities are endless! Plus, defining your own custom tunings is as easy as pushing a couple of buttons, fretting your guitar, and plucking each string individually. Also, a new Li-Ion battery pack gives you 12 solid hours of playing time. Now you can take the stage with a guitar shop's worth of instruments and never have to swap out your axe or its batteries!

Top Of The Line Custom Shop Quality Guitar - Plus All The Technology

by Andy from Colorado

Let's face it. This guitar has a pretty serious uphill battle. It's a $3500 guitar from a company whose entire product line, if bought one at a time just a few years ago, might not add up to $350... read more [+]0.

If you're going to spend this much on a guitar, there are a whole lot of other well known options. At this price point, you can easily afford the Custom Shop models from Fender or Gibson or even in to some slightly more exotic offerings from PRS, Suhr, Collings, etc., There's a very long list of excellent guitars to choose from when you go this big.

I can emphatically state that this guitar easily belongs in that elite category of high end guitars. I own six Custom Shop guitars from Fender and Gibson and this guitar competes on every single level. It's a top notch guitar even without all of the modeling technology. No one would suffer if the technology wasn't included in this guitar nor would it be any less of a value. It's that nice of a guitar. It's worthy of the price tag without the modeling stuff. The build quality, the parts, the HSS pickups, the quality of the neck, the body resonance, the fit and finish - all worthy of any custom shop, handmade guitar and in the case of the bridge and the neck, may be even better. This is a guitar you will love to play first and foremost and, as guitarists, that's what matters most. I am truly blown away by how nice of a guitar this is. For that alone, it gets 5 Stars.

I haven't even mentioned the modeling yet but the modeling is icing on the cake and like any good icing, it makes this cake a whole lot better.

In the band that I play in, I use a 74 Strat, 68 LP, Rickenbacker 360- 6 or Fernandes Sustainer in to a Fractal Audio Axe-Fx II. I have 2-3 presets per song. Those presets rely on the basic tones from one of those guitars to sound right. I can't use one of my Strat presets with a Les Paul and vice-versa. It would sound horrible. In running thru each of my presets tonight at rehearsal, I was able to get 99% of the original sound using the LP, Strat and Ricky models on the JTV-69 USA. In a couple of instances, I liked the modeled sound better and in one or two instances, a whole lot better. Even the output was very close to each of those guitars - which was great as I didn't have to chance my I/O configuration or my gain at the board. I won't be able to replace my Fernandes Sustainer just yet, but there's no longer a compelling reason to haul around my Strat, Ricky or LP other than the fact that they look cool. And, that's just three guitars - I haven't even gotten in to the acoustic models the dobro, etc., but from the little time I have given them thus far along with my experience with the Variax 700 acoustic, I wouldn't even consider bringing a real acoustic on stage.

Now, keep in mind that I'm playing in to a modeler. I have a whole lot of room to tweak - and I do. I've fully embraced the digital thing over the past couple of years. This guitar takes it a step further - actually, a giant step. The possibilities are endless. The tones are capable of being phenomenal and the flexibility is entirely new territory - entirely new. This guitar is a game changer. It's disruptive technology. It's causing me to consider selling guitars that I searched high and low for and have cherished (and abused) with great passion for many years.

Bottom line: Even if the modeling part of it broke, I would still play it and it would be among my favorite guitars. The modeling technology just puts it in to a whole different level.
