Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (Black) Reviews

Sweetwater Advice

Mark Thompson
I originally bought the Geddy J-Bass because I am a huge Rush fan. To my surprise, I started using this bass for more and more styles of music. Having played a Ric Bass for many years but wanting more tones, this bass offered both the thinner neck and flatter radius I was used to and more tone than I expected at this price. Hat's off to Geddy Lee and Fender for putting amazing sounding pick-ups in a bass that could cost a lot more.

Sounds better than my friends Musicman!!!

What a unique "tubular" type sound you can get with this bass. No actives on it, but it doesn't need any! Simple, great sound.

Incredible!!!

My bass teacher is impressed with [my] this bass! He says it has the same natural tone quality as a piano... which I took it as a great compliment to the instrument. This bass feels good!!! I got the heaviest one available at the time of purchase and it paid off in tone; it's incredible! It's a great all around bass! I've played everything from Beatles, Zeppelin to Red Hot Chili Peppers on it! Besides the tone, the next best feature is the neck! But that 'song's' already been sung in the other reviews! Everything they say about this bass is true! This is a keeper!

My First Bass....

....no regrets.....any. It's my first bass so I can't give an in depth technical review. I'll get rid of equipment pretty quick if it doesn't feel/sound right or is hard to play. This will be around for a very long time. it comes with a very nice soft case, but get a hard case anyway.

All the Reviews Are True

Yes, all the reviews are absolutely true. These pickups must be waxed dipped, 'cause they are super quiet, meaning no extraneous noise. Thick and clear tone. Yes, the neck feels like heaven. It's all due to the Japanese high high quality. They are fanatics about quality control. Be picky only about the weight. Some of the Geddy Lees are a ton; but once in a while you find a light one. Always ask how much does it weight. Anyway, you will be pleased with every Geddy Lee.

Best Bass I've Ever Owned

I have been playing bass for 22 years and I have played a lot of instruments. This is without a doubt the best sounding and best playing one I have owned. I usually stay away from "signature" models and I am certainly not a Geddy Lee disciple, but don't let those factors deceive you, this is a terrific bass. The neck is perfect, nice and wide, and not too deep. The sound is stellar. Thick and meaty but still clear and round. I have been doing nothing but recording with it, mostly really hard stuff, and it sounds incredible. I have also been screwing around with it in my practice sessions playing old Flea and Les Claypool stuff and it sounds great on that as well. OK, and I admit that I did play Tom Sawyer on it, but only once. Sounded pretty sweet on that as well. Don't bother paying more for a bass that won't be as good, this is almost as good as it gets. I've played instruments that cost twice as much and delivered about half what this baby does.

Excellent Instrument

Read the reviews about the slim neck and thought since I needed a new regular scale bass(the Mustang feels great but the tone sacrifice was becoming a bit much) this would be good for my smaller hands. The action and set up was perfect right from the start. It sounded ok through the old trace elliot at the shop and figured I could tweak my rigs later. The neck is to die for.Fast and slim, great for small hands. The guitar is built like a brick house. The range of sounds is great-everything from punk growl to dusky deep jazz tones to bouncy funk.It even made my junky Genz Benz rehearsal cabinet sound good. The guys in the big blues badn I play with raved that the bass just punched through and really improved the over all tone of the band. I could finally hear myself!! The bad *** bridge is sturdy and reassuring. No pick up hum. The slim neck will help reduce wear and tear and time getting re-acclimated to a regular scale bass again. The bass looks cool as well. So far, no complaints. A really top notch, quality product at a really good price. While I was never a big Rush fan,and was always skeptical of "artist" signature models, this one has blown my mind. Just a great axe!

Jeebus!

I agree with the chap above! I AM a geddy Lee fan, but I am a serious recording musician as well. When my wife surprised me w/ this bass @ X-mas, I was jacked... but when I played it.... This is definately the best playing/sounding bass I've ever owned. Nothing else is even close. Do yourself a favor and pull the trigger on this beauty!

"The" Sound

I have small hands,so I don't like basses with thick necks. This one is great for me. Thin, fast neck.

Besides the great neck and killer look, the sound is great.

When you play it hard, with a good amp, it growls like Geddy's sound. Really !

I loved the sound that I got when I plugged it in my GK 400 RB. Amazing sound. Perfect for Rock.

Geddy Lee Jazz Bass

I simply can't say enough about the quality and versatility of the bass. I've owned MANY makes and models of basses since I started playing in 1978. Rics, Musicman basses, aluminum neck Kramers, Spectors, Aria's, you name it. This Geddy Jazz bass is THE ONE. Yes, I like Geddy's playing, that's not what makes the bass at all. The workmanship, playability, balance, action, fit and finish is all great. But, the most important aspect of this bass is the TONE! Warm, fat, round, full. ALL THINGS GOOD are at your fingers. I wish Fender would offer the same bass (maple neck and black block markers) in a sunburst finish. I'd buy one in a heart beat. Do yourself a big favor and try a Geddy bass at your local Fender dealer.

Awesome bass

Wow, the pictures and reviews of this bass that you can find on the internet do no justice whatsoever to this amazing guitar. It looks amazing with an extremely glossy black finish, and the block inlays look great in contrast to the maple fingerboard. The sound is also amazing, being affected by the badass II bridge and the vintage pickups. There is also a rickenbacker-style double truss rod , which prevents warping and makes neck adjustments easy. The neck is also the thinnest I've ever played, as it is based on Geddy's shaved down '72 neck and has an extremely thin radius. I use it for playing with a jazz/funk band in a bar, as well as rocking out to metal, punk, and anything that takes my fancy with a few friends. All I can say is give it a try and you wont regret it.

Bought this bass after playing in bands for 18 years. I wish I had this when I was an active player, it would have made life much easier!
Spent too much money customizing basses trying to get this sound, playability and quality.
