From Our Research Team:

Bold Analog Modeling Synth from Alesis!

Bolstered by futuristic design, a turbo-charged sound engine, and a simple user interface, the Ion 49-key analog modeling synthesizer brings analog-style control to a new level of accessibility.

Alesis Ion Analog Modeling Synth at a Glance:
  • Punchy 8-voice synth with three oscillators and two filters per voice
  • 30 control knobs and 70 buttons!
  • Includes onboard effects

Punchy 8-voice synth with three oscillators and two filters per voice
Driven by Alesis' proprietary 500 MIPS sound engine, the Ion packs eight voices of smooth analog-style punch, with three oscillators and two multi-mode filters per voice. This four-part multitimbral sound engine serves up everything from warm, round bass tones to lush pads and gritty lead sounds, making Ion perfect for music styles ranging from rock to funk and the latest house, techno and trance dance styles.

30 control knobs and 70 buttons!
Of course, an analog modeling synth wouldn't be worthy of the name if its console didn't feature more buttons and knobs than the command center in a 50s sci-fi movie, and the Ion delivers. You get no less than 30 realtime control knobs, over 70 direct-access buttons, a pitch-bend wheel, and two assignable modulation wheels. Using the Ion's clean, intuitive user interface, everything from radical filter sweeps to subtle tonal changes can be performed in realtime, just like the classic analog synths of the past. Additionally, a large 160x160 graphic LCD provides exceptionally high-contrast feedback throughout a variety of operations.

Includes onboard effects
The Ion's onboard effects include chorus, flange, phaser, echo, distortion, fuzz, compressor and more--all developed using Alesis' legendary effects algorithms. Of particular note is the Ion's full-featured Vocoder, which can perform up to 40 bands of vocoding with no negative impact on the Ion's polyphony.

Alesis Ion Analog Modeling Synth Features:
  • 49-key velocity sensitive analog modeling synth
  • 8 voice polyphony, 4 part multi-timbral
  • 500 MIPS, providing exceptional anti-aliasing performance
  • Over 500 built-in programs, and 32 part setups
  • 4 balanced analog outputs
  • Stereo balanced analog inputs
  • MIDI In and Out/Thru ports
  • Built-in switching power supply is also included

The Alesis Ion synth is truly a charged particle!

ALESIS ICON

Initially,my quest for an analogue modeling synth was the Nord Lead 2X,but when I discovered the Alesis Ion,I decided to postpone the Nord & jump on the Ion-I was that amazed by it!

The... read more [+] reviews & online audio demos blew me away, but to actually get my hands on this keyboard was an etherial experience-absolute synth heaven!

3-dimensional,lush,crisp & in-your-face sound patches that really came to life through my Adam A7's!
There's plenty of default factory sounds that are very impressive & for those programs that are a little bland...well..you can tweak the hell out of the program to make ANY preset usable!

An authentic ensemble of programs that brought me back to the 70's & 80's & I immediately thought of shows like Miami Vice & artists like Jan Hammer.

The most fantastic sounding synth with unbelievable build quality & simply the most inspirational synth out there at this price point & beyond.

This synth is truly an anomaly & the best $600 bucks I have ever spent!

This keyboard is just too good to be true, but somehow it is the truth,& I just cannot understand how a keyboard at this price is made so well, especially considering all the other flaws in various other Alesis products.

Why can't Alesis build all they're products like this?!! close [-]

Absolutely amazing!

I can't get over the fact that Alesis is offering this synth at this price. Everything from fat basses and sweet pads to metallic clanks, morse code sounds, and other cool sound effects are all right ... read more [+]there at your fingertips. With all the knobs and buttons, there's hardly anything that can't be tweaked in real time. The mod matrix is really impressive and adds greatly to the instrument's flexibility. Want to modulate the output volume with a random s&h pattern, while simultaneously modding one of the filters with a mod wheel? No problem. This thing is modulation heaven.

I've read complaint about the keyboard and front panel buttons. Some say the keyboard feels cheap and the buttons are too small and also feel cheap. While the keyboard could use a crisper action, it sure beats the heck out a few of the clunky monstrocities attached to some of the old vintage synths I've played, so I can't complain too much, given the price point. The buttons feel fine to me and are easy to use. No real complaints there either.

Essentially, you get a nice and solid synth that does a darn fine job of mimicking true analog, with a surprisingly large set of filters and a staggering number of modulation routing capabilities, and you get a decent vocoder (Kraftwerk, anyone?) to boot. Well done, Alesis! close [-]

I own one and love it! Great visual feedback and thick, warm sounds!
Yuval Fuchs
This is one of the most inspirational synths I have laid my hands on. The diversity of unique sounds that can be created with this instrument is virtually infinite. I also love the tactile aspect of this keyboard - It's solidly constructed, with 360" rotary knobs, a great feeling keyboard and all in all, it's just beautifully designed.
