How Sweet It Is

by Lee Rothman from Salt Lake City, Utah.
March 22, 2007
Music Background: guitarist for 43 years, home recording engineer for 18 years.
I fully expected this pre to bathe me in some clean and open sound. However not only did it do that it astounded me with its shear transparency, openess and attention to all detail. When you unpack it... read more [+] and just turn a few knobs to get a feel for it, you know you're in for a treat. The sweet detented knobs, and front end replete with all the audio adjustment you could possible want is there at your reach. The EQ is as musical and honest as they come (thanks I understand in part to Rupert Neve), and the De Esser does its job without calling attention to itself. The compressor can run the gamut of hard and agressive to sweet punchy and transparent. All you hear is the rich and sweet output. It is of course superbly constructed and this is conveyed upon close observation. The limiter is also quite transparent and does not call attention to itself other than simply keeping your level where it belongs. I am so very pleased I upped my budget a bit and got what I would have to say is a sonic wonder. close [-]

Clean, Useful and a Great Deal

by Morgen Sharp from Ojai, CA USA

Music Background: Recording Engineer, Rocker
I recently bought this box and promptly went over to my friends house for a pre-amp A/B...C/D/E/F/G.
I am so pleased. The featured contenders were the Crane Song Flamingo. A Chandler Limited Ab... read more [+]bey Road and a Neve 1073. Also a bevy of compressors from crane song to UA to Neve.

The ISA 220 sounded great. It was a step down from the Neve (which had been moded some) and the Chandler...well..I just love, but more for its particular sound...anyway, that step down was a short one!

(btw I thought it kicked the Flamingo right out of the pond!)

The pre-amp was full, natural, and overall well balanced with a good punch. It actually sound like a slightly less articulate Neve. The low end was a bit lacking too and I was not that impressed with th EQ at correcting or improving this situation. Nevertheless, this box is amazing. Just how discrete, subtle and subjective the differences between this and those much more expensive boxes speaks volumes to me about its value as a front end box.

I like the compressor not only as effective tool, but also a nice coloration under certain applications. The stereo link has me itching for another.

If this is sitting somewhere in your budget and serves your work I would not hesitate it buying it now. I hope and believe that you'll be as pleased as I am.

Cheers. close [-]

Very suprised with the performance

by Robert Zantay from NYC in the USA
January 24, 2008
Music Background: 40 years as a woodwind player, synthesist and recording producer/engineer
I was recording an electric guitat player friend in my studio. He was actually the first electric guitarist I had attempted to record. I most use the preamp for recording myself, with a microphone, pl... read more [+]aying saxes or flutes. The player asked for some compression, and after about 30 seconds of setting up the unit he exlaimed "Wow, I love how great my ax sustains with a good compressor. The tracks I recorded were very easy to mix as I was able to (at the point of insert)roll off unwanted frequencys in the low end, and use the gate to keep any hum from being recorded when he was not playing. I was also working with dynamics that were not all over the place, due to the compressor and the limiter.
This unit works really well and I am thankful to My Sweetwater salesman, Dan, for suggesting it. I had no clue when I put my studio together as to what preamp to use, but he was very insistent as to the need for a quality front end for my studio. close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Ted Hunter
I picked mine up mainly because of the preamp and EQ, but I've also been very impresssed with the de-esser, which no other channel strip in this price range has. The instrument input sounds great as well.

This unit is excellent on not only vocals but I have gotten some killer bass sounds as well. Super transparent, flexible. Want to purchase A/D card next. Focusrite knows their stuff.
