September 3, 2009 Music Background: Pro musician, Recording engineer, Songwriter / Producer I just got my new rig back from the shop (thanks to Jason at "too many guitars"). DO NOT attempt to install the GK kit unless you are a good to great repair person. The GI-20 is simply a plug in situation using USB, Midi, 13 pin cord, and 1/4 inch connections. I had the Roland GK midi pick up kit installed on a G&L Commanche (strat). The GK kit is installed internally and is not a stick on pick up with exterior connections. The GI-20 allows you to have a seperate 13 pin connection that can be used in combination with, or completely seperate, guitar sounds using the regular 1/4 inch cord to an amp/ P.A. or effect stomp box. You are also still free to plug in the guitar using the standard 1/4 inch plug from guitar to amp!! The combo is great. The ability to use keyboard modules or plug directly into Pro Tools using the soft synths on intrument tracks is amazing! It really sounds like a keyboard and not just a guitar imitating key patches. I use mine with various Soft Synths, a Roland Fantom XR module,EMU MoPhatt module, and a Korg Triton module. There is a bit of programming involved to have different sounds for each string or bending the string. Without it string bends just go to the next note, wakes a weird sound, or does a trill. Once again, the specific patch and sensitivity settings play a big role!! Also the programming capability is there to intergrate it in to a stomp box like a boss G-8 or generic footswitcher using the pedals for expression, triggering patches, and effects. I have played other guitar synths in the past and found some of them to have "keyboard like" guitar sounds. There were also tracking issues. Of course some of them were crazy exspensive. I have found this set up to be far more advanced than past guitar synths. Its actually useable and affordable!! Of course you have to play a bit different depending on the patch used. Sticcato patches track very well when playing fast lines. You can't strum in the percussive manner most guitar players are used to when using lets say a drum or a string pad. However even a key player has to adjust to the characteristics of specific sounds. So this is not the grand solution for that. The tracking is very good as compared to the past. I am looking for rack ears for the GI-20 for my live set up. I also have to buy the 30 foot 13 pin cord to be mobile. It ony comes with a 10 footer. Only time will tell if it will stand up to live performance. I hope its tough enough and not just a studio item. close [-]
