Does what it's supposed to

I have an old '90s Anvil rack, and several Gator GR series racks, and now three of these G-Pro units for racked power amps.

Obviously the Anvil is a different animal from a different time; plywood shell, aluminum valances and trim, built for the road.

The GR series always seemed a bit flimsy to me, as if they couldn't take a hit like the Anvil. I've got two revisions; two with the bottom pins and lid hooks, and one without. One one hand, I prefer not having the hooks and pin because they make it slightly less convenient to remove and attach the lids. On the other hand, they do get in the way.

The G-Pro appear to be more capable of extended road use, and the lids fit and latch without internal pins and hooks. On the upside, the lids come off as soon as you pop the latches. On the downside, the lids come off as soon as you pop the latches.

The G-Pro series are, of course, stackable, thanks to the outer shell design, just like the GR series. However, the G-Pro interlocking design is not compatible with the GR series' design, as the extrusions and depressions are in different places. This means you can't build a stable rack pillar, or hedgerow, unless you have all of the same, or keep GRs with GRs and G-Pros with G-Pros. The GR will sit on top of a G-Pro, but not the other way around, and it's not a stable interlock.

I looked at other brands, including some that were similar in design to the Anvil, as that's how road cases should look, in my old-man's opinion, but the ball-corner design of one prohibited stacking, while the recessed handle on the lid of another didn't sit right with me; the handle recess would reduce internal space, and looked like it may possibly contact knobs on the front face of certain rack-based preamps.

I'm also not fond of how the G-Pro's latches stick out while the lids are off. These are potential snag points in a crowded setup.

The all black design motif is also a bit dated, IMO. It might work if you put some Batman details on it, but I grew up seeing black and aluminum cases, so I'm a little biased. The important thing is they work as they're supposed to. It also looks like the rails are two sets of 1U, instead of a single 2U rail. This is good in case one gets damaged, you should be able to replace it, but I haven't dug into it to see how it's put together.

An inherent problem with rack cases is lid storage: seems no one's thought of this over the last few decades. The same is true here: remove the lids and put them....somewhere. Once the units were in place, I'd like some way to hook them to the exterior sides, just to keep them handy.

Also, there's not a prepared space on the exterior to place a neat and tidy label showing the contents, and with several identical cases, it's easier to grab-and-go the right item if it has labels. Flappy tags can fall off, but then again, with a label stuck to the lid, if it gets put on the wrong case for whatever reason, and you just grab-and-go, you could end up grabbing a mislabeled item.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the Gator G-Pro 2U 19. I'll likely replace my 4-spacers with these in the future, because I like the interlocking features to be consistent.

Best case I have owned so far.

Heavy duty seal on my case. Which is great for keeping moisture out of the gear when not in use. Its strong and in my opinion, I think it's better than the traditional kind. Well worth buying it.

Gator G-Pro

These G-Pro series cases are SO MUCH better than the GR series it's hard to believe. The latches actually work! Why they still sell the GR series, and for more money, I can't understand.

This thing is a beast ! Super strong , yet lightweight. Great mounting plates with screws included and top notch locking clamps on both ends is awesome. Too it all off with a carrying handle . Great for gigging and anytime your transporting your hardware.
