ReviewsGreat Amp!
by from Fort Wayne
This is a fantastic practice amp. I have several amps, all tube, but have had a hard time finding a really good, versatile practice amp for "spare bedroom" use. I have an epiphone valve jr. head and... read more [+] cabinet, and it is loud as heck. Also, it has no reverb, no tone controls, and is kind of tricky, in that the tone is not as sweet as a really clean tube up, but does not get dirty enough at low volumes to really sound like an overdriven tube amp. By the time you get to where you are driving the tubes, you are being evicted from your apartment. I also have a 30 watt crate palomino (american version) and a twin reverb. again, both very loud for practice use. I bought an attenuator, but it sucks the tone when you have it working enough to get the volume to a reasonable level.May 9, 2010 Music Background: hobbyist Despite my love of tubes, and general loathing of cheap solid state amps, I decided to look to see if I could find anything worthwhile that did not cost a fortune. I like the Roland micro cubes, but this amp won me over hands down. First, it is cheap. It is hard to find anything that costs less that it not a total piece of junk. Second, it is small, super small. It is very easy to stick it out of the way, and then whip it out to plug in. the best aspect is the tone, which is really surprising for such a small, inexpensive amp. Every control works very well, and overall the amp sounds great. It is perfectly quiet, and the tone is warm and rich. it also has a very useful sets of controls, and each one really works. It has a gain nob and volume nob, and you can use the gain nob like a master volume. It is really nice for controlling gain at low volumes. The tone control is very effective also, and will give you any tone you want. Just turn it to the right of center for a bright top end, and left of center for warmer tones. The amp model nob is pretty cool, and offers very good sounding models. I use the tweed and blackface settings most often, and they sound warm, with sparkle. it has a jazz setting which works great with an acoustic guitar (and an acoustic guitar setting, which does not work well with a piezo acoustic pickup, but works fine at making an electric guitar sound like an acoustic guitar). Similarly, the digital effects all sound very nice. I usually leave it on a low reverb setting, which works well at adding warmth and depth to the sound. What really sets this amp apart is g-dec selection of backing tracks. you get a large number of tracks fitting various styles of music. What is super cool is that you also get a tempo nob to adjust the tempo to whatever speed you desire. Similarly, there is a nob to set the bass line to any key. You can also turn the bass off so that a buddy can jam with you. I like this amp so much that I thought about trading up to the next model, which gives you many more backing tracks and a lot more flexibility and ability to sync with a computer. That model is double the price, however, and is a little larger. For a small, convenient practice amp, I cannot imagine a better choice than this amp. close [-]
