Blistering speed for your audio applications In the computer audio world, more IS better! And that's what the Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz gives you. The newest Apple Macintosh has more speed, more RAM capacity, 64-bit processing, and more expansion options. Your audio and video applications never had this level of power to deal with, and you'll love how they respond. In fact, for almost any creative pursuit, the Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz simply has no competition. Welcome to the world of 64-bit computing! Bottlenecks in the system architecture are usually what hold back the fastest processors. That's why the Power Mac G5 2.7GHz system architecture is engineered to eliminate traffic jams in your data path. Dual 1.35GHz, 64-bit bidirectional Double Data Rate (DDR) frontside busses shovel data to and from the processors for maximum speed. A 128-bit memory controller supports 400MHz DDR SDRAM and enables main memory to address two banks of SDRAM at a time, effectively doubling the bandwidth of your computer. In fact, in tests the Power Mac G5 2.7GHz ran a plug-in-laden Photoshop application at double the speed of the closest PC! Runs cool and quiet The dual 2.7GHz Power Mac G5 features an innovative liquid cooling system that's more efficient than a traditional heat sink. This system provides a continuous flow of thermally conductive fluid that transfers heat from the processors as they work. The heated fluid then flows through a radiant grille, where air passing over cooling fins returns the fluid to its original temperature. OS X Tiger supports 64-bit, lots of RAM Every Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz comes with Tiger, Apple's latest release of Mac OS X. With its 64-bit features, Tiger provides access to as much as 8GB of physical memory in the Dual 2.7GHz! Even 32-bit applications benefit from the system's ability to access large amounts of RAM: The system can manipulate data in multiple applications entirely in RAM for maximum performance. Plus, with OS X Tiger you can search your entire Power Mac in a single click with Spotlight, access up-to-the-second information with Dashboard and run all of your software faster. New 16x SuperDrive makes archiving faster, easier High-definition audio demands and bigger projects need more storage space when you take them off your hard drives. The 16x SuperDrive built into every Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz now supports double-layer (DVD+R DL) discs. Double-layer discs have two layers of data, allowing the SuperDrive laser to read and write on either layer, almost doubling the storage to 8.5GB. Using iDVD (included on every Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz) or DVD Studio Pro, you can author discs with over three hours of MPEG-2 video on one DVD+R DL disc. If you work with high-definition video, use the SuperDrive to burn double-layer discs with more room for high-bit-rate H.264 video. Loads of expansion options We know from our years of experience configuring Macintosh computers that you love to expand on the basic Apple Mac package. The Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz gives you room to grow, with an extra SATA hard drive bay to augment its 250GB SATA system drive. Plus, the Power Mac G5 2.7GHz offers three open full-length PCI-X slots: one 133MHz, 64-bit and two 100MHz, 64-bit. It's ready to run that Pro Tools|HD system! Advanced graphics card supports two DVI monitors If you're doing film scoring or audio for video you'll love the Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz graphics card. The ATI Radeon 9650 is installed in an AGP 8X Pro slot for a maximum bandwidth of 2.1GB per second. Here's good news: the Radeon 9650 supports a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display right out of the box! It comes with 256MB DDR2 memory installed, which is a good thing, because the Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz uses its graphics card to accelerate the entire system. Powerful graphics give Quartz Extreme the power to display Mac OS X features - such as drop shadows and ripple effects - seamlessly. Your graphics card does the heavy lifting so the G5 processor can crunch your audio numbers without hindrance. For true over-the-top performance, configure your Power Mac G5 with the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card. One of the fastest graphics cards available, it also allows you to connect two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays for a staggering 8 million pixels of screen real estate. In a word, smokin' With 64-bit power and high-bandwidth architecture, Apple's groundbreaking Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz alleviates the limitations and bottlenecks of a traditional PC - opening up a new level of power for video and audio producers. The dual-independent frontside bus architecture, an advanced system controller and high-speed, high-capacity memory combine to make the Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz one of the fastest PCs ever built! Chunky...

Music Background:
I'm a newbie to Macs, but not to Pro Tools, which is why I bought my Mac in the first place. Well, that and I'm tired of Windows bugs. So, you're getting a 'newbie's' p... read more [+]erspective on things. From a technical standpoint, I don't have much to offer, but I will offer a few comments on the things that I notice the most.

The first thing I noticed is how heavy and well built this computer is! I'm a big guy, and I was surprised at the weight of the G5. If weight is an indication of sturdiness, well, I'll have this computer for a long time. Very solid.

The new operating system is nice. After using Windows at work for so long, it's taking a little getting used to, but it's not that bad. I'm sure there will be little things that I will encounter from time to time, but I'm not too worried about it just yet. My Pro Tools 002 Rack setup was as easy as plugging and playing. The graphics of the new operating system are great, and obviously, with dual 2.7 Gig processors, there isn't much of a problem with speed and handling power.

I opted for an optional monitor instead of the Apple monitor to save a few $$$, and that's not a problem. Don't feel like you have to buy all Apple products.

I have found Garage Band to be a nice surprise. If you're a non-musician, Garage Band is a really cool tool.

When I purchased my G5, I added more RAM, so I'm running 1.5 G's of RAM to handle processing power often associated with audio. However, with the G5 2.7G processors, there probably won't be too many tasks that put a stress on the system.

The thing that encourages me about Macintosh computers is that studios all over the place are still using G3's and G4's, and some still have G2's! That should be a testament to Macintosh's durability.

As I learn my system and find out it's pros & cons (I don't expect many cons), I'll check in and write about those. close [-]

Our Customers Say...

My Sales Engineer is the best. If I need it tomorrow, I have it tomorrow. He makes sure everything is in order and that I'm set up right. I've spent a lot of money at other places, too, but I don't remember them calling me to make sure everything's okay.
