From Our Research Team:Mobile & Affordable FireWire Recording!FireWire 410 delivers powerful performance for FireWire compatible computers. Its 4-in/10-out configuration is perfect for personal recording where you build up tracks one at a time yet need multiple outputs. FireWire 410's ten outputs allow your computer-based recording system to behave more like a traditional analog recorder or sampler, where signals are bussed to multiple channels of an analog mixer or to multi-channel monitoring systems. Software-controlled DSP handles all internal routing and mixing. And the bus-powered architecture of the FireWire 410 also means that you have the flexibility of mobile operation for everything from field recording to tracking on the run.M-Audio FireWire 410 Audio/MIDI Interface at a Glance:
Four inputs and 10 outputs at 24-bit/96kHz FireWire 410 is a FireWire-compatible audio/MIDI interface that has it all-power, flexibility, compact size and low price. FireWire 410's 4-in/10-out configuration complete with preamps is perfect for personal recording, routing discrete outputs to a mixer, or directly driving a surround sound system. The on-board ASIO 2-compliant mixer and software control panel provide total routing flexibility-including monitoring with external effects. You also get ultra-low latency software monitoring and near-zero latency hardware direct monitoring with the FireWire 410 - and two headphone outs with independent level controls let you collaborate with a partner anywhere, anytime. FireWire 410 can even be completely bus-powered for total mobile operation (6-pin FireWire port required) Stereo D/A conversion at 24-bit/192kHz FireWire 410 uses the highest quality components for digital audio conversion, insuring that your music sounds its best. 24-bit/96kHz ADC combines with high-level design and software driver technology for optimal fidelity. Stereo D/A conversion at 24-bit/192kHz High-end audio formats such as DVD-Audio are delivering output at a stunning 192kHz sampling rate. If you're ready to take your critical listening to the next level, FireWire 410's ability to output 24-bit/192kHz fidelity in stereo will really open your ears. You also get high-resolution 96kHz audio from all outputs simultaneously with the FireWire 410. Two analog input channels with quality mic preamps The FireWire 410's two independent analog input channels accept a wide variety of input signals. A front-panel switch for each channel selects between 1/4" TS (-10dBV) line-level input on the rear and Neutrik (1/4" TS and balanced XLR) mic/instrument input on the front. Connect microphones, guitars, keyboards, samplers, CD players and more to the FireWire 410. The driver software allows you to route these internally to any analog or digital outputs. Dual high-performance preamps Each of the FireWire 410's two input channels incorporates award-winning M-Audio microphone/instrument preamp technology-complete with +48-volt phantom power for condenser mics. They offer up to 48dB of gain for instruments like guitar and bass-and an amazing 66dB of gain for microphones. The FireWire 410's 20dB pads, as well as signal and clip LEDs on each channel also aid in adjusting proper input signal levels. These preamps simply sound great no matter what you connect to them. FireWire bus-powered operation means that you can record anywhere your laptop goes. Eight analog outputs plus S/PDIF digital I/O The combination of eight 1/4" TS outputs and software-controlled routing and mixing on the FireWire 410 yield a tremendous amount of flexibility. This design is equally suited for routing individual signals to separate channels on an external mixer or directly driving the components of a surround sound system. Any output pair on the FireWire 410 can also produce high-definition 24-bit/192kHz signals for amazing sonic clarity. FireWire 410's flexible aux bus has a variety of uses. The aux sends allow you to monitor your inputs complete with external effects while tracking. You can also use them to create a separate monitor mix to route to a headphone amplifier to give an artist exactly the mix they need for those inspired takes. Digital I/O The FireWire 410 offers two channels of S/PDIF in and out to allow pristine transfers with other digital devices such as CD players, DATs and MiniDisc systems. The software control panel selects between rear-panel coaxial and TOSlink optical inputs, as well as which signals are routed simultaneously to both digital outs. The FireWire 410's accompanying LEDs indicate valid data for both input and output. S/PDIF sample rates can either sync to external sources or operate at 44.1kHz, 48kHz or 96kHz. Surround ready outputs handle AC-3 and DTS formats The eight independent outputs on the FireWire 410 are ideal for directly driving a 7.1 surround sound system. The digital outputs also offer passthrough of AC-3 and DTS surround content to an external decoder. Low-latency software monitoring All software-based recording packages incur some amount of delay between input and output due to processing. Significant amounts of this delay-known as latency-can cause timing problems when recording overdubs. FireWire 410 uses extremely low-latency ASIO 2 and WDM drivers. The software control panel allows you to tailor the buffer size to the least delay possible for your CPU-as few as an unnoticeable 64 samples on fast processors. Near-zero-latency hardware monitoring with effects FireWire 410's advanced audio architecture allows you to directly monitor your inputs while recording with virtually no latency. Unlike most audio interfaces, you can even use the FireWire 410's aux bus to route the input signals through an external signal processor so that you can monitor with effects. Built-in digital mixer and patch bay The combination of the built-in DM1000 FireWire controller chip and DSP-embedded ARM chip provide full onboard mixing and routing capabilities via the FireWire 410's software control panel or your ASIO-2 compatible music software. Route any input to any output-analog or digital. Mix the FireWire 410's hardware inputs with software returns. Route to stereo effects via two mono aux sends per channel. Send the monitor mix to any output pairs. Route any audio stream to headphones. MIDI I/O In addition to audio, FireWire 410 also features a built-in 1 x 1 MIDI interface. A bypass switch also allows throughput from MIDI In to MIDI Out , allowing you to maintain gear connections even while the computer is off or busy with non-musical tasks. The included drivers are compatible with most popular MIDI software for both Mac and Windows. This a very good audio interface. The preamps sound great (no hissing whatsoever), and the construction is very sturdy. The buttons jiggle a bit, but that's really of little concern. The outputs also ... read more [+]jiggle just a tiny bit, but, nevertheless, they still feel quite sturdy. The accompanying software is quick and easy. The audio output quality is simply amazing and, combined with the durability and extremely sleek look, it is quite a bargain. If you want multiple outputs plus quality stereo preamps, this is an incredible deal. Anything else with these features cost around $500. close [-]

I've never bought a piece of equipment that has solved as many problems as the Firewire 410. The ASIO drivers have eliminated almost ALL of the latency that I used to experience in Ableton Live, Cubas... read more [+]e, or any other platform that I work with. Also, the portability of this interface makes it unbelievably easy to record ambient environments, interviews, class lectures, or sound outside of the studio. From the beach, to a concert hall, to recording a podcast, the 410 offers some of the best maneuverability, quality and control of any interface like it. the quality of sound is great too...I love the phantom power and control surface! January 1, 2007 Music Background: Custom Soundtracks, DJ ideal for home studios seeking professional sound
by Darryl from Ottawa, ON
This unit has quite a remarkable price/performance ratio. Sure, Pro Tools HD will show this thing who's boss, but at this price, this little dude demands to be heard. I recently added some Rokit RP5s ... read more [+]to go along with the 410 (along with a pair of Audio-Technica M40fs headphones to match the RP5s), and the results are astounding. DVD-Audio (Metallica's Black album in this case) sounded amazingly clear and warm and rich, with none of the digital harshness (ugly sounding highs with lows often too overpowering) that frequently accompany more mainstream consumer-level audio products. Software synths like Native Instruments' Absynth or Steinberg's Hypersonic sound extremely realistic and very deep. All the smallest details can be heard. Heavy distortion or clean tones transfer beautifully to software like Cubase. For under $1000, you can have a private studio with audio quality only dreamed of a few years ago.October 24, 2006 Music Background: independent artist/student A few things to be aware of - a fast hard drive and a fast computer in general with lots of RAM are pretty much a requirement to get the most out of the 410. Also, be prepared to fork over some more cash for studio monitors (at the very least, a nice pair of headphones, otherwise you're kinda defeating the purpose of the 410). One of the best purchases I've made!! close [-] Best in its price class

I never had a problem with the FW410 - no pops, no clicks, no shutdowns - it just works and it does its job better than the Presonus Firebox which I tested in comparison to the FW410.May 25, 2006 Music Background: Singer, Songwriter Its housing... read more [+] is made out of plastic but feels solid and pro. Only the knobs for gain, level control and headphone-volume feel a bit "unprofessional". The FW410 doesn't run hot, even after days. In comparison: the Presonus Firebox ran very hot after less than an hour - I don't like "burning" devices on my desk. The preamps are very neutral and noise-free in combination with a good condenser microphone (in fact they produce less noise than the Presonus Firebox preamps, which I was very disappointed of due to the positive reviews, the Firebox received). The overall sound of the FW410 is upper homerecording level and the handling / stability is exemplary. I can say nothing but good about M-Audio and the Firewire 410. This device is the best in its price class - period. close [-] M-Audio FireWire 410
