From Our Research Team:

A versatile FireWire interface from PreSonus!

With the addition of the FireStudio Tube audio interface, PreSonus expands their successful FireStudio line. The FireStudio Tube is packed with sixteen analog inputs - two tube-based channels, eight XMAX preamps, and six balanced TRS inputs with Neutrik balanced TRS outputs, and also sports MIDI I/O. The FireStudio Tube brings the best of the past (the tube preamp on two channels) and blends it with modern technology (low jitter clock and FireWire) to create an audio interface with a variety of sonic colors. FireStudio Tube is a perfect fit in any studio.

PreSonus FireStudio Tube at a Glance:
  • Analog front end
  • Digital back end
  • Compatibility
  • FREE bundled Studio One Artist recording software

Analog front end
On the front end, the FireStudio Tube is equipped with a variety of top-notch analog inputs - 16 in total - to bring source material into your session. The front panel is equipped with a pair of tube-driven preamps that are great for vocals, drum overheads, or acoustic guitar - pretty much any sound source that you want to add a bit of "tube" tone to. The back panel is loaded with eight XMAX solid-state preamps for mics and six balanced TRS line inputs for connecting external preamps or line level gear. Balanced line outputs round out the analog feature set.

Digital back end
D/A conversion is handled by convertors sporting 114dB of dynamic range and clocking being handled by a JetPLL low jitter clock. A single FireWire cable connects the FireStudio Tube to your computer. A 34 x 4 mixer matrix allows for sending latency-free multiple monitor mixes to performers. MIDI I/O rounds out the connectivity of the FireStudio Tube.

Compatibility
The FireStudio Tube is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Vista 32, so no matter which system you're running you can fit the FireStudio Tube into your studio. On the application side of things, FireStudio Tube works with Cubase, Logic, Nuendo, Sonar, among others.

FREE bundled Studio One Artist recording software
Don't have recording software? No problem. The FireStudio Tube comes with PreSonus Studio One Artist for free. This awesome recording software suite features a really easy-to-use design, and you can record unlimited tracks. FireStudio Tube Rocks

I've been using the FSTube for a few months now and it has performed exceptionally well. I use Sonar 8 Producer and has been solid for me...despite what I read on the other forums. PreSonus support (Johnny McAndrew) have been superb in their support as well as dealing with Sweetwater. I've been a long time PreSonus user and have had ZERO hardware failures. This is one nice piece and very cost effective for the quality of the pres and the number of inputs available. Highly recommend the FSTube and it does a stellar job with Sonar. close [-]

The Ultimate 16x8 Interface!

by Level 10 Productions from Minot, ND

This product is everything Presonus claims it is, and more! 16 clean inputs, super low noise and actually 8 (not 6) digital and analog outs, if you count the headphones. I first tested on my HP pavili... read more [+]on laptop with Sonar thinking I would never get 16 tracks to work at 88.2kHz/24 bits, but it does! Sonar gives me occasional dropouts which I don't believe is due to the Firestudio, it's very common to Sonar and Windows, however, Presonus has a very nice feature in the mixer s/w which helps alleviate much of this as well.
I was truly surprised at how well the limiter works, which is actually a compressor/limiter in my own estimation. It starts compressing where ever you set the threshold. The compression ratio is automatic and seems to work just fine and becomes a super clamp when levels get dangerously high, but it is important to test and adjust the two settings carefully before recording.
The tube drive sounds very clean and warm! These two inputs work exactly as stated. I wouldn't use them for recording anything where super accuracy is needed as they do add coloration and some tube distortion, but that is what they're supposed to do! They add silky smooth warmth! You can't get that kind of sound with any s/w that I know of. They work fantastically on vocals and guitar (which use these channels anyway).
When you need clean, the XMAX pre's are the best! I am seeing around -82.5db noise floor with the trims all the way down and no inputs. Tube inputs (15 and 16) read -81 and -84 (quite different, each and hense the half-star off) and the line inputs around -96db.
Another thing you can't learn from specs is how nice all the controls feel. All the knobs have nice tight click-stops with no sloppyness and push buttons are solid. The led's shine brightly and there are plenty of seperate switches to control 48v phantom power.
The mixer software is nice! Everything worked right out of the box. The mixer is intuitive and very flexible, even switching between more firestudio units if you have them. You can route anything to anything and yet, the interface doesn't use up much screen realestate at all. It has everythihg I can dream up!
To sum up, if I were designing something I could record a whole band with in one shot, this would be it! Look NO FURTHER! And it all fits in ONE rack space? Wow!!! Thanks Presonus, it was worth the wait!
BTW, if you've never bought from Sweetwater before, their shipping, handling, and customer support here will spoil you rotten!! Yuval, you rock bud!

Solid performance on a budget

by Jeff from Indianapolis, IN USA

Music Background: Amateur Recording Engineer
I've been using this for about three months recording sessions for a weekly show on SIRIUS XMU and the website www.laundromatinee.com. It's been a solid performer to date. The preamps sound great with... read more [+] no noise--a big step up from the Mackie board I was using. I've recorded everything from 2-track acoustic sessions to a 14-input live concert with drums, horns, guitars and vocals, all at 24/96. Cubase LE is serviceable, though I'm thinking of switching to Apple's Logic or Ableton.

My setup is very budget: a 7200rpm LaCie quadra hard drive coordinated by a standard Macbook (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/2GB RAM/OSX Tiger). On occasion, the FireControl software will freeze with Cubase running--though it doesn't interrupt the audio flow, just the ability to control output levels. Could be a limitation of my Macbook.

My only other beef is that I don't get much signl from the line level channels, even when the source (usually keyboard) is cranked all the way up. I learn to manage by lowering all other levels in FireControl or using my old Mackie preamps. The Presonus inputs are so clean and noise free I can raise the levels in Cubase later.

I love that I can send up to four latency-free stereo mixes to either headphone or speaker amps. The control surface is a bit tedious, but you really could use it to run a full show and record it too!

I was looking for a portable, all-in-one-box solution for recording live sessions and this has been a great solution so far. close [-]
