The Fantom-X7: Great Sounds, Audio Recorder, Pads, and More!

The Fantom-X Series is the flagship of the Roland workstation family, offering musicians nearly 1GB of wave memory when fully expanded, and 128-note polyphony. At the top of the vast soundset is Roland's finest 88-note split stereo-sampled piano, with each note individually sampled at multiple velocities. In addition, the Fantom-X provides room for four SRX expansion boards, so users can customize their soundsets to their specific needs and stylistic preferences.

Roland Fantom-X7 Keyboard Workstation at a Glance:
  • Powerful synth processor with 128-note polyphony
  • 8-stereo-track audio recording, with perfect MIDI sequencer sync
  • New string sections, expressive drums, and amazing 88-note stereo piano
  • Skip Back Sampling preserves those inspired riffs
  • Complete studio effects and mastering tools
  • Complete audio/MIDI workstation
  • USB connection for MIDI and file transfer

Powerful synth processor with 128-note polyphony
The new Fantom-X Series comes with a choice of three keyboards, but they all have one thing in common: Roland's new sound generator chip. This chip is Roland's most powerful to date, and it not only makes it possible to play expressive 4-tone Patches with 128-note polyphony, but it also raises the Fantom-X Series' waveform capacity to approximately 1GB when fully expanded - far more memory than any other musical instrument on the market. What's more, the internal wave ROM has been doubled with quality-focused sounds that will please even the most jaded player.

8-stereo-track audio recording, with perfect MIDI sequencer sync
Thanks to the power afforded by the new sound generator chip, you get both sampling and digital recording. That's because the Fantom-X is capable of handling audio on the level of a digital recorder. This means you can record either short samples for playback on the keyboard, or long, linear takes similar to a digital recorder. Eight stereo audio tracks are now standard on all Fantom-X6, -X7, and -X8 models. And with room for up to 544MB of sample RAM, there's plenty of recording time available. Samples can be slaved to tempo with real-time time-stretching and edited using powerful tools like Wave Edit and Chop. Users are free to load samples in .WAV and AIFF formats and back up data to convenient PC cards with up to 1GB capacity.

New string sections, expressive drums, and amazing 88-note stereo piano
When Roland engineers developed the Fantom-X Series, they wanted to fully exploit the potential of the new chip. That's why each keyboard comes with a brand new 128MB wave ROM loaded with quality-focused sounds like vivid new string sections, expressive and fat-sounding drums, rich nylon string guitars and an amazing 88-key split acoustic piano, which uses individual stereo multi-samples for each key and every velocity stage. Would you believe there are over 700 samples used in this single Patch? Many of the instruments were recorded in world-class studios using multiple microphones and were mixed like music into samples by renowned studio engineer Dan Blessinger (Martinsound) - resulting in a level of quality unheard of before.

Skip Back Sampling preserves those inspired riffs
First introduced on the Fantom-S, Roland's Skip Back Sampling has become popular with musicians for its ability to instantly retrieve a performance and turn it into a sample. With Skip Back Sampling, your ideas never get lost because the sampler is constantly recording every note you play - be it on the keyboard or Dynamic Pad Bank - while keeping the musical bars intact. Speaking of which, these 16 velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive pads now sport twice the polyphony and an improved feel for even more natural drum programming and sample triggering.

Complete audio/MIDI workstation
Whether sequencing MIDI tracks, triggering samples from the Dynamic Pad Bank, or even recording audio tracks directly to RAM, the Fantom-X Series makes putting it all together a seamless process. Lay down a drum track by combining the internal drum sounds with loops, which can automatically sync to tempo via real-time time-stretch. Then record some keyboard parts as MIDI and finish your song by tracking guitars, vocals, or other live audio tracks. The high-resolution sequencer boasts up to 400,000-note capacity and supports Standard MIDI File (SMF) import and export, making the Fantom-X by far the best workstation in its class.

Complete studio effects and mastering tools
Onboard effects include separate reverb and chorus processors, plus three multi-effects processors loaded with sound sculpting tools ideal for creative sampling. These include algorithms like COSM Guitar Amp Modeling, Lo-Fi processing, tempo-synced delay, Slicer, Isolator, multiple effects chains and more. (In Performance mode, all three MFX can be configured for full parallel or complete serial use - or any combination in between.) When you're ready to mix down, simply switch on the dedicated Mastering processor with multi-band compression for tight, punchy mixes.

USB connection for MIDI and audio file transfer
The onboard USB port serves two functions: First, it can be used as a USB-MIDI interface, eliminating the need for an external MIDI interface. Second, it can be used to import and export audio in .WAV/AIFF format. Now it's easy to bring in samples from your computer and use them in a sequence. Likewise, you can quickly mix down your song, re-sample it in stereo, and then transfer the file to a computer for CD-burning.

Wonderful...

I've had my Fantom X7 w/ 8-track expansion now for about 3 weeks. Although I'm still learning my way around it, this keyboard is nothing short of wonderful. I also own a Motif ES8 and a Ko... read more [+]rg Karma, and a Clavia Nord Electro on the way.

When I told a buddy of mine - who is also a player - that I'd bought a Roland Fantom, he thought I'd lost it. Why did I need another keyboard? Well, after I let him test drive it, he immediately understood why. The first thing he noticed was how even the sounds were. On a Korg, when you play the lower register, it has a tendency to be overpowering. Not so with the Fantom. The piano sounds are very even and precise. My buddy, being primarily a percussionist and keyboard composer, noticed how perfect the marimbas and percussion were, from the strike of the mallets to the decay. He was sold.

I'm a performer and home studio owner, so sound quality was my focus. My Motif is a bear to maneuver, and I'd been looking at a Triton Extreme. The Triton Extreme does have awesome sounds, but the Fantom sold me at the last minute. All of the sounds are great, with certain sounds being obviously better than others. The full-color screen and layout is a very nice touch, too. I like the ability to load txt. files. If you're a live player and need to have some chords or words in front of you, or even a set-list, this could be an awesome capability.

The 8-track expansion is rather user friendly. Within just a minute or so, I was switching tracks, adjusting placement, and I quickly realized the ease of recording in this format. I initially didn't want the 8-track expansion, but the thought of having it when you're away from the studio is comforting, plus I got a really good deal.

The thing that sold me was the quality of the sounds. Not just that, but this keyboard is easy to get around on. I do wish the keys had a little more resistance, but it's a preference. If you purchase this keyboard, I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. I haven't used the drum pads much, but I'm sure those will come into play soon enough during some studio sessions. Once I get to know the keyboard more, I may come back and elaborate further. If you're looking for good all-around keyboard workstation with superb sounds, especially in the piano department, you won't go wrong with this one. close [-]

BUILD

The overall feel and build of the keyboard is excellent and very sturdy indeed, the real time controllers and various other buttons have certainly been improved from the rather plastic one's on the FA series of Fantoms.

THE KEYS

The keys themselves feel pretty good for a 76 note version keyboard, although i was spoilt with my previous A37 controller with Semi-Weighted keys. The aftertouch and touch sensitive keys however are a bit of a let down, and there doesn;t seem to be a lot of movement from hitting the keys softly to the loudest. Again i am not sure if its because I was used to my A37, but feel that the 76 note version should have been slightly more improved, and a compromise from the smaller 61 note version, and the larger 88 Hammer Action of the X8.

SOUNDS

I've always loved the Sounds of Roland since my very first JV1080. They are also more superior than the XV5080, more richer and warm than the XV. You can however download the XV5080 patches into the Fantom X, they do however sound slightly different as the fantom has completely new Waveforms. The Piano sounds are excellent, and up until now I preferred the Motif for Piano, but i think personally the Fantom have beaten this, the many variations of piano and other keyboards sounds is amazing, making the SRX-02 board defunct.

The analogue sounds are very expressive and warm. Guitar sounds excellent, and again like the pianos some of the patches have been multisampled giving extra expression when playing. I found the Brass sounds very weak, and compared to the Korg they are very thin. The Synth sounds are much more superior than the Korg, which i feel rely on effects too much, the Fantom X doesn't seem to need this, although adding the various effects do offer that extra dimension. The previous Fantoms just took the XV waves and had different patches from them. The new X series have completely different wave forms altogether from the XV series and so far are the best Roland have come up with on any Rompler.

EXPANSION

With expansion to 512mb of sample ram, 4x SRX boards and 1gb Compact Flash, there is enough here for anyone. The Triton does have the Hard Drive and CDRW, but sometimes this can be overkill, and present you with too much storage leading to mismanagement of sounds and patches which often make it more difficult to work with.

OVERALL

The unit is excellent, and certainly the best I've owned upto now. There are a few glitches with the OS, and the bug of storing samples when importing via USB, but nothing that an OS update won't fix (currently on V1.0). close [-]

What I've been waiting for...

This keyboard is nothing short of wonderful. The full color display is easy on the eyes and intelligently laid out. The sampled grand piano is superb - better than my K2600 with the piano rom! The ... read more [+]sound itself is brighter than the Kurzweil, but you can dial back the release using one of the 4 controller knobs and dial in the darkness you desire. The sound also includes a very convincing sympathetic resonance.

Overall, the sounds seem to be tailored to those writing dance/trance/hip hop/etc. However, there are still hundreds of great sounds for orchestral, classic keys, drums - pretty much whatever you need....and they're infinitely adjustable. I was able to overcome the lack of orchestral / classic keys sounds by installing the Complete Orchestra and Ultimate Keys SRX expansion cards. I'll ultimately add the dynamic drum card, but the onboard sounds are very nice. Also, don't bother with the SRX Piano card - you won't need it. You'll see what I mean when you try it for yourself. And you definitely should. I've always used Roland, Yamaha, and Kurzweil. But this new Roland has me convinced that it answers to nobody. close [-]
