A New Synth Legend In-The-Making For Your Desktop!

Dave Smith, the creator of the legendary Prophet 5, Wavestation, and first soft-synth in the world, the driving force behind MIDI, has done it again with his latest innovative synthesizer, destined to be a legend, the Evolver.

Dave Smith instruments Evolver Features:
  • Monophonic (one voice) synthesizer.
  • Four oscillators in total: two analog, two digital.
  • Analog Oscillator waveshape are Sawtooth, Triangle, Saw-Triangle, and Pulse (with voltage-controlled analog Pulse-Width modulation).
  • Digital Oscillators select from 96 wavetables from the Prophet-VS (128 x 12 bits), and 32 user-loadable (via MIDI) Wavetables (128 x 16 bits). The Digital Oscillators get trashy as the frequency gets higher, as with the original VS.
  • Hard Sync on the analog oscillators.
  • FM and Ring Mod on the digital oscillators.
  • Separate Glide per oscillator, with two glide modes.
  • Real voltage-controlled analog lowpass filters - not digital recreations. 4-pole/2-pole switchable, fully resonant (in 4-pole mode). There are two separate filters, one for the left channel and one for the right.
  • Analog Voltage Controlled Amplifiers (VCA), again one for each channel.
  • Dual digital 4-pole Highpass filters (one per channel); place before or after analog electronics.
  • Stereo audio inputs; Noise generator.
  • Envelope Follower and Peak Detect from External Input to use as modulation sources.
  • External Input can be used to gate envelopes and/or step the Sequencer.
  • Three snappy ADSR envelopes.
  • Four LFOs (sync with sequencer and MIDI).
  • Dual (left and right channel) tunable feedback loops; modulate frequency and amount.
  • Delay with 3 taps; each with separate time and amount modulation. Syncs to sequencer/MIDI. Normal feedback and additional feedback path through analog filters.
  • Distortion! Digital, one for each channel, can be placed before or after analog electronics.
  • 3 Banks of 128 Programs for 384 total Programs - dump to/from MIDI.
  • 16 x 4 Analog-style sequencer - syncs with MIDI.
  • Extensive Modulation capabilities, including audio-range modulation. Bipolar (+/-) modulation.
  • Easy to program matrix-style front panel with 8 endless-turn rotary encoders.
  • A bunch of MIDI stuff.
  • Stand-alone editor for PC.
  • The internal computer and DSP chips can be reprogrammed via MIDI, for easy feature additions.
  • Evolver's universal power supply runs virtually anywhere; 100 - 240 V AC, 50-60 Hz. It also includes a number of adapter plugs to make it easy.
  • Evolver is 10.75" wide, 6" deep, and 1.5" high (27 x 15 x 4 cm). Yes, it is small!

This is more synthesizer than anyone could ask for at this price! I love it!

When the Evolver came out a few years back, I picked one up. This was the first Dave Smith instrument (hardware) in over a decade, and I had to get my hands on it. Over the years, he's released severa... read more [+]l items based on Evolver technology, but it all started with this guy. Basically, you have all of your basic synth waveforms in here, plus a lot of pcm-based items. You can do simple subtractive synthesis, FM, or sample-based stuff. The whole gamut is in here, which is amazing given the price tag. Analogue-style step sequencing is even available, which takes a little bit of getting used to, but can be a blast and a great way to waste (not really) a whole afternoon with just the evolver and a MIDI keyboard. The fact that you can also use it as a guitar pedal (kind of) and a bitcrusher are fantastic. Most any classic analogue sound can be produced with it, from sweet watery tones to sawtooth waves ripping dancefloor flesh. The onboard effects are fantastic, as well. You can also, of course, get a version of this with a keyboard that also has a larger display, and you can even string this little box to a Polyphonic Evolver to give it another voice or two. You can even make faux-chords and arpeggiations. It's really cool, and you have to look at the demos on Youtube to believe it. Great little piece at a great price. I would recommend it for ANYONE making electronic music. close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Why don't you have one of these? The Evolver would be a monster synth/audio processor at twice its price. Read the specs... you won't believe what you get for the money!

I borrowed the Evolver from another sales engineer here, and I am hooked. There is even a "Sweet Dreams" preset on this that sounds exactly like the original song. Absolutley Amazing! I added this in to my DJ rig. Well, I guess you could call it a DJ rig. I am running two Korg drum machines, a laptop running Traktor DJ and Ableton Live and decided I needed more. I produce Drum n' Bass, Ambient, Industrial and spin Hardcore. Aside from the sound, the size is perfect. As most DJs and synth guys know space runs out quick when you are gear junkies like us. Minimal size and massive sound, an electronic musician's dream come true.

Our Customers Say...

I can talk to my Sales Engineer about any piece of equipment, and he always steers me in the right direction. He truly knows what he's talking about, and he never tries to over-sell me on anything. If he worked in the Nashville area, I'd probably owe him about 20 dinners by now!
