This New Wind Controller Has It All!

The Akai Professional EWI4000S is a newly designed electronic wind controller. This expressive musical instrument incorporates several improvements in the development of MIDI/synth instrument capabilities. With the sound module and the instrument integrated into one product, you no longer need to be tethered to a sound module. By using MIDI and audio wireless transceivers, EWI4000S players can move freely on the stage as they play. You can easily switch between programs on the EWI4000S directly with a dedicated Program selection button, or use the note keys to select stored patches.

Akai Professional EWI4000S Wind Controller/Sound Module at a Glance:
  • Includes controls and functions wind players have demanded
  • Integrated sound module frees you from rack units!
  • Great virtual analog sounds
  • Powerful synth oscillators and filters
  • New octave doubler and other control functions
  • Built-in effects
  • Includes computer editing software

Includes controls and functions wind players have demanded
The EWI4000S has many of the long sought after controls and functions that are necessary for expressive performance. While these benefits have been proven by its predecessors, the EWI offers these features at a much lower price. There are several improvements to the design as well, such as having a built-in sound module, direct MIDI IN and Out, and other updated operating functions. These features make playing the EWI4000S easier than any other electronic wind instrument.

Integrated sound module frees you from rack units!

Great virtual analog sounds
The internal sounds of the EWI4000S are based on a virtual analog synth sound module that is very responsive to the player's nuance. With easily accessible controls for breath, vibrato, glide time, and bend width, users can adjust the settings of the EWI4000S to their specific playing style. You can send multiple MIDI messages via breath control to send expression and aftertouch control messages.

Powerful synth oscillators and filters
Besides being a great wind controller, you also get a first-rate synthesizer. The EWI4000S has new synthesis features that were not available on previous EWI's. The internal analog modeling synth has two voltage-controlled oscillators (sawtooth, triangle, square with pulse width waveforms) with individual volume control. The voltage-controlled filter has a feature that allows you to change from 2 to 4 pole filters. The EWI4000S's new noise generator and a dedicated Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF) add more realism to your playing, emulating breath noise.

New octave doubler and other control functions
The EWI4000S offers some new performance control features as well, such as the Octave Key. When you activate the Octave mode, you get an automatic doubling of notes one octave below the note you are playing. There is also a Hold Mode, which holds a note that you select- enabling you to solo around that note. This is the first EWI with sostenuto capability!

Built-in effects
The EWI4000S has a new sweep function, which works more effectively than a typical envelope generator. As you change the force of your playing, the sweep parameter will alter the shape of the sound. The synth contained inside has a LFO (low frequency oscillator) specifically for the voltage controller filter modulation. This LFO affects vibrato as you use the bite sensor. The EWI4000S also has built-in effects, a first for Akai EWI products, such as Reverb, Chorus, and Delay to thicken or double-up your solos.

Includes computer editing software
Since it would difficult to put all the knobs and buttons on the EWI-4000 that are needed to adjust the various parameters, the EWI4000S ships with a computer editor program to allow users to customize their sounds ahead of time for live performance. This editor ships standard in both Windows and Mac versions. All of your edited Programs can be stored inside the EWI4000S, so you can recall your settings instantly during your performance.

Akai Professional EWI4000S Wind Controller/Sound Module Features:
  • State-of-the-art electronic wind instrument
  • Touch sensitive keys and octave roller for quick and responsive playing
  • Sensitive breath sensor for expressive dynamics
  • Built-in analog modeling synth sound module
  • Built-in MIDI output for use with sound modules

I love the EWI. I got it several months ago and played it for while but got tired of the horrible internal sounds. I updated my EWI with the Patchman Music EWI4000s soundbank and now IT ROCKS!

Akai Wind controller gets thumbs up.

I am enjoying this EWI4000S by plugging it through my Alesis HD8. I am impressed that the Akai wind controller has no moving parts except for nine control buttons. This tool will last a long time. S... read more [+]ome pretty smart people dreamed this thing up and made a digital horn that will take trills at lightening speed. I could not trill that fast on a keyboard. It really sounds like a horn. The models that are built in include a great soprano sax but nothing that sounds much like a tenor or alto sax. I assume horn players already have saxes so they want new synth and sample sounds anyway. I am a guitar and keyboard guys who wants a sax sound in my headphones while my neighbors and family hear nothing (I can practice longer) so I have to plug into a tone module for sax sounds. I do love this horn and believe its "no moving parts" idea will prove best as the years roll by -no moving parts = no maintenance I will predict. The Alesis HD8 has a wind modeling engine and it will prove useful with this horn. Yamaha Motif racks and synths offer a horn modeled soundchip option that I look forward to trying. In short, if you are a horn player you can use the Akai. If you are not a horn player, then you can become one and your chest and lungs will swell with pride! (ha ha). Because the breath sense if adjustable, you can make it easy or hard to breath into, and it takes a fair amount of wind to drive this thing, so it will get you into shape and that cannot be bad, right? I mean it. This thing will be my close jamming buddy for years. close [-]

EWI-4000s is Excellent BUT...

Like Reviewer Don Blum says - the instrument is excellent but the manual and instructions are terrible. Confusing, unclear, pretty near impossible to understand and follow.

That would be far more important and useful. Too bad EWI developers lack common sense. close [-]

No wonder many are trying to sell the instrument that was just purchased, Because of lack of decent instructions. Akai could sell more instruments and have satisfied costumers if they would take the time to write a thorough and understandable Owner's Manual. A link to some good tutorials as far as they go, was sent to me by Geoff Allen, but they are incomplete at this point in time. They were of help though and I thank you Geoff. db close [-]
