Classic construction The Epiphone Wilshire Phant-o-matic is a solid rock'n'roll machine. With its mahogany body, mahogany slim-taper set neck, and tune-o-matic bridge the Wilshire will produce tone gig after gig. The comfortable rosewood fretboard features block inlays and sports a 12" fretboard radius. Classic appointments and specs make this a smooth playing guitar. History of the Wilshire Erroneously referred to over the years as "budget models' and "poor-man's Gibsons," the Epiphone electric guitars manufactured at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Mich., between 1959 and the early 1970s have long represented some of the greatest values around in quality American-made vintage instruments. From the time of its introduction, the solidbody Epiphone Wilshire has been a favorite "undiscovered classic" among those in the know (such as Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and Paul Gilbert), but the fact that so few Epiphone Wilshire Model SB-432 guitars were ever produced (only 180 in 1962) combined with its unerring quality, playability and tonal versatility, has sent its value soaring from its humble introductory price of $210 to upwards of $5,000 to $12,000 on today's vintage market, depending upon year and condition. Custom electronics This version of the Epiphone Wilshire features an entirely new electronics setup. The Phant-o-matic starts off with two pickups, the Alnico Classic Plus humbucker in the bridge position and the Alnico Classic humbucker in the neck. To further broaden the sonic capabilities Epiphone included the well-known VariTone notch filter. With six selectable filters you can dial in precise humbucker tones, and even a few single-coil tones. You can dial in 18 distinct tones between the 3-way pickup switch and the VariTone filter, how is that for flexibility? Last, but not least, you can create those cool stutter effects with the built-in momentary kill switch that lets cut the output of the pickups.
