Best in Korg Lineup
by Henche Mann from San Diego, CA, December 2006
Music Background: Pro Musician, Recording, Performing, Electronic Styles
I've been using the Electribes since their inception back in 1999-ish. The MX is hands down the absolute best incarnation of the series. It is a monster sound module and drum machine. For example: I gate arangements/ chord progessions from my Triton via it's audio in jack to create some really freakish and sublime music. I also run my guitar through the audio in jack to use it as a "guitar synth/ fx box"- no joke. This thing is a total BEAST. The brain of my rig.
Construction: Rock solid. I take this thing out gigging constantly. It's a tank. Chassis is METAL! I really wish KORG would have used this same quality level for their newest line of gear (Micro X, Radias, X 50 etc...)
Where will KORG take the Electribe next? For starters, would it kill KORG to give us at least ONE channel of Polyphony? (My one and only gripe!)
Possibly the most versatile synth out there...
by H.B. Stone from Palm Desert, CA, September 2006
Music Background: Mastering engineer, hobbyist musician.
The Korg EMX is likely the most versatile synth I've ever heard. It has 16 different synthesis types, and hundreds of drum sounds and waveforms. Jack of all trades, but master of none; its so broad that it isn't quite perfect for any single purpose, but it definitely does complement ANY setup. It is also designed to be useful in live performance, so several features are geared toward ease of use.
Mad creation at a friendly price
by Random Rab from San Francisco, September 2006
Music Background: Producer/ Live Performer
I love this modern vision of the old school sound. The best part of this machine is the ability to create new and interesting melodies and beats on the fly. Turning the tube gain up means 100% penetration through any soundsystem. The bass is a little muddy, but the mids and highs are superb. This is a great compliment to a laptop DJ setup or for someone into electro, D&B, techno, or breaks performing live-PA.
A versatile tool for any musical application
by Eric from Hazleton, PA, July 2006
I have owned the EMX-1 for about a year now, and it has been one of the most versatile and influential pieces of equipment in my collection. There is a common assumption that this Electribe is only for dance and techno music, however I have personally used it for many different applications. The drum part sequencer is very intuitive and produces very realistic sounds, and all parameters are easily adjusted. When used as a MIDI controller, the power of this sequencer is truly evident. If you like “knob twisting”, this Electribe allows one to really fine tune the desired sound, as well as alter the characteristics of the sound throughout the song. You can also connect the Electribe via MIDI to control the knobs on virtual instruments, such as the synths provided in Reason. One other main feature is the twin vacuum tubes. When used in conjunction with the audio-in jack, this unit can be used as a tube pre-amp. I have used a send from the vocals into this machine, adjusted the tube gain, and it has produced an extremely impressive warmth to the track. Overall, I recommend this Electribe to anyone who wants a versatile tool in their arsenal that can enhance the sound quality and uniqueness in any application.
