A Jumbo Guitar with an L.R. Baggs Pickup!

Epiphone revives the prestige of its 1930s guitars with the new Masterbilt Acoustic Series. These new flat-top guitars feature solid wood construction and a distinctive 1930s-style “offset notch” peghead shape with historic Epiphone script logo and mother-of-pearl “stickpin” inlay.

The classic Jumbo shape of the AJ-500ME is the preferred guitar of modern music legends. With gracefully sloping shoulders, solid mahogany back and sides, and a solid Sitka spruce top, the AJ-500ME blankets a room with deep, rich and rounded tones. The AJ-500ME includes the eSonic 2 System electronics

The beautiful grain of the Masterbilt woods is enhanced with a natural satin or vintage-style shaded finish. The dreadnought and fingerstyle models have full-body abalone binding, tapered dovetail neck joints glued with hot hide glue.

AJ500ME Vintage Sunburst

Did a bit of research before deciding to order this guitar. From what I gather there isn't much that compares to it at such a low price with all solid tone woods. In general I'm not a fan of ordering ... read more [+]a guitar online, I much prefer trying before buying, but I could only find this guitar online. Alas Sweetwater has a good return policy so I was not extremely concerned with being stuck with a guitar I did not like. I've had the guitar for about a week now and I am very pleased. The clear weakness of this guitar is the fit and finish which leave a bit to be desired. The satin finish is far from perfect with slight blemishes visible in the right light. Some edges like on the headstock and around the sound hole should have been sanded further as well. Lastly the binding adjacent to the fretboard looks poorly filed down at the edge and attracts dirt. While these issues may make the guitar not quite a show piece they really don't diminish its tonal qualities. The sound is fantastic this good punch and crisp high end. Really the guitar just sounds fantastic. Again plugged in the Esonic2 system gives a nice flexible sound seems adaptable to many a PA system. Lastly and hardly least the action and playability out of the box was terrific. I was expecting to have to set the guitar up myself, but the guitar was near perfectly in tune with low action and no buzz strait out of the box. I would absolutely recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a great sounding, easy playing and sweet looking (vintage sunburst) acoustic electric with a low price. For what it's worth I've been playing for about 15 years and have played a crap load of acoustics I could never afford and this guitar really impresses me. Cheers! close [-]

AJ-500ME 2009 - Not the same quality as 2007

by Tech Gaming from Thousand Oaks, CA

Music Background: Hobbyist
I owned the AJ-500M puchased in 2007, and loved the guitar enough that I would grab it first over my many others. The 2007 AJ-500M was a first rate guitar with an excellent High Gloss Top finish and ... read more [+]overall attention to detail from top to bottom. I ended up selling the 2007 instrument to puchase an new ME model for its built in pickups. Saddly, the new Masterbilts are not even close in quality to the early versions. The quality has really come down on these guitars. The Satin Finish really screams "low end" compared to that great early Gloss Tops of old, and many cosmetic flaws on the Head to the point that you have to wonder why they bother putting the inspection stickers on the guitar. The action on my new ME was so high, that I suspect the added thickness on the undersaddle pickup was not factored in when they tossed in the saddle. The Action Dimensions for my New AJ500ME out of the box were as follows; 1st Fret Bass E - .040 12th Fret - .120, 1st Fret Treble E - .030 12th Fret - .100. The nut height was 6/64th. Hard on the fingers to say the least..... I gave the guitar a complete setup bringing the spec to; 1st Fret Bass E - .020 12th Fret - .100, 1st Fret Treble E - .020 12th Fret - .080. The nut height to 5/64th. With the setup, the AJ plays great and to be honest, sounds a good as you could ask for. Had the finish on the New AJ been even close to my old 2007 model, the AJ500-ME would have been a near perfect guitar for it's price point. close [-]
