From Our Research Team:

A no-frills tone machine!

If you're lusting for a Gibson ES-335, but can't swing the lofty price, the Epiphone Dot is an attractive alternative. The Dot features a laminated mahogany body, a glued-in mahogany neck, and a rosewood fretboard. Its vintage pickups have alnico magnets (just like the vintage ones), and the faded finish lends the look of a well-loved, well-played instrument. The only differences are the headstock shape, single volume and tone controls instead of two each, and the bridge (which is wider than a Gibson Tune-o-matic). The Dot is well made. Its medium-sized frets are lightly polished and well shaped, the neck joint is clean, the hardware robust, and the finish is flawless.

The Dot's neck is a little girthier than the ultra-slim sticks fitted to some 335's. It fills your hand nicely, and the low action makes it a delight to play. Played through a variety of amps, the Dot does a decent job of evoking the plump shimmer of a real 335. Higher gain settings yield some of the meaty rhythm colors and round, sweet lead tones associated with Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. The Dot features oversized volume pots that preserve the highs as you roll down the volume. The tone controls offer smooth, predictable treble rolloff.

Epiphone Dot 335

If you want an ES335, but don't have the $ (or at least don't want to spend it), take a good hard look at this axe. I have one in white. From the factory, Pickups were to low, bridge to high (both m... read more [+]y opinion), I "Dialed it in",,,now it plays nice for a $800 axe, but for a $250 axe, PLAYS AWESOME,,, for what it is, with some minor adjustments & new strings(D'Addario .10), very impressive! The finish,,, Flawless for a painted guitar (truly shocking)! The sound, thru a DSL401,,, if you own a DSL,,,, buy one of these,,, you will be blown away! Either clean for Jazz, or a bite that I still can't believe! Maybe I just got lucky, but I'll tell you, on this particular guitar,,, if they are all like this, I can't believe every player doesn't have one, or I got TOTALLY lucky! Currently I have 11 guitars hanging on my wall,, some pretty nice stuff. I'm telling you,,, buy this guitar,,, you will love how it sounds through A Marshall DSL or probably anything with all tubes. Must be something with the thin walled body,, but trust me, if you own a DSL or TSL,, BUY ONE!!! You'll thank me!!! Trust me!! close [-]

I've always wanted an arch top guitar, and I got this one back in the summer. It plays very well, and is reasonably priced in comparison to it's higher quality Gibson siblings. Great Guitar, great price.

by Eric from Conesus, NY

I have had this guitar for almost a year now which gives me a more partial opinon now that the newness has worn off. Currently I own 4 guitars and this is the guitar I pick up most often, likely due t... read more [+]o the tone it produces but the neck width fits my hands better. The simplicity of the guitar is what makes it so appealing with a basic finish, one volume and one tone control, and Alnico Humbuckers, in this case less is more. I would suggest keeping the light guage strings or maybe go up to 10's, I tried 12's but had way too much bass. Both clean and crunch sound awesome, I play through a Custom Wav210 amp with a Digitech Screamin Blues pedal and a Dunlop Baby Wah. If I were to modify this guitar I would want to change the nut to a graphite one, add on a pickguard and I am kicking around changing out the pickups to the new Epiphone active pickups, not because the old ones are sub-par but because I can't leave well enough alone, thats just me.
Overall, this is a great guitar for the price and you get more than you paid for, even my father in law who's been playing for 40 some years takes it away from me when the family gets together for a jam session. close [-]
