Two Gibson TB Plus humbucking pickups The Thunderbird Classic IV is a bass monster. How so? It's the neck-through design, and, of course, the pickups! No doubt about it - your pickups are often the weakest link in your quest for the ultimate bass sound. This T-bird packs a pair of Gibson TB Plus humbucking bass pickups with ceramic magnets that give you boatloads of legendary T-bird growl - and none of the noise. The technology behind T-bird tone The pickup configuration on the Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV is unique. Rather than placing a pickup near the neck, which could muddy up the tone and reduce its effectiveness, Epiphone gives the bass essentially middle and bridge pickups. This lets you dial in everything from growling tones to funky punch. Each pickup gets its own volume control, along with a single tone knob for fine-tweaking. A history of distinctive quality Nearly four decades ago, the Thunderbird bass design was introduced by Gibson. Bassists could now enjoy some distinctively shaped instruments and get their moment in the spotlight. It doesn't hurt that the Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV sounds amazing! Much thought went into the design of this bass, including a thicker middle/thinner wing body construction for a substantial yet lightweight playing experience. April 11, 2013 Music Background: Bassist AMAZING bass for a bargain price

Wow. Let me just start with that. Wow.November 11, 2012 Music Background: Professional bassist w/ 13 years' experience This bass is unbelievably good. Typically, Epiphone's instruments look and feel like cheap, knock off versions of Gibson's instruments, and are priced... read more [+] at a third of the Gibson price to reflect this. Not here. Very seriously, there is almost no discernible difference in quality between this and the Gibson Thunderbird. Let's get into the nitty gritty of what you're getting with this bass here. It's full scale, has a real rosewood fretboard with a 12" fretboard radius, 1.5" Nut width, it has the same thin c-shape neck profile as a Gibson, actual Gibson Ceramic TB+ pickups, a faithful body and headstock shape/size, neck through construction, and real mahogany. More than that, the lower cutout has been reshaped slightly to allow much better upper fret access. Compared to my other Epiphone and to my Gibson Thunderbirds, this one actually comes out on top. Playability-wise, the neck is great and feels just like my Gibson Thunderbird. No sharp frets, no baseball bat neck, much unlike my other Epiphone Thunderbird. The pickups don't have that nasally mids boost that Epiphone's TB+ pickups do, but they do sound just a tad hotter than the pair in my Gibson. The volume and tone knobs have more useable range than either of my other basses. The real winner, however, is the newly reshaped lower horn. Upper fret access is a breeze. Also, relocating the strap peg to the back of the bass really gets rid of the neck dive. The bottom line is that for a quarter of the price, you get pretty much the same bass as a Gibson. Of course there are minor quality control flaws (upon real close inspection under a magnifying glass, the paint line separating the neck from the fretboard on mine is wavy, and so is the one separating the white paint from the black headstock veneer,) but considering that they're almost unnoticeable and don't affect playability, I can't see the point in skipping out on this bass. Flat out, this is the best bass you can buy for your money. Nothing else in it's price range comes even close. close [-] wow - let's talk Bang for the Buck

Terrific attention to detail on both the paint and finish. It feels like poly to me, so it is sure to be durable and will last a long time before looking "road worn" if it is treated well. It's a 9-ply neck through, not a 7-ply as the website says, and it is very stiff, ensuring that you will not need to be tuning it or adjusting the set-up very often. It's also fast and very easy to play. Good quality hardware, good quality pots, and those excellent Gibson TB Plus humbuckers give the T-Bird growl that you cannot live without. It's a little aggressive so you might want to adjust your technique a bit if you're a heavy player, but guys like me with a light touch will appreciate being able to get an aggressive tone without having to adjust our technique. And let's face it - it looks as Rock & Roll as it sounds. This was my first purchase of a new bass in 20 years and I was not disappointed. It's more than I expected it to be. So even though I'm absolutely in love with it, I had to knock off 1/2 star for a couple of reasons. #1 - that 3-point bridge. Sure, it does the job and it does it well, but it is not as easily adjusted as the traditional Fender bridge. #2 - there is some neck dive when playing seated that is not there when standing with a strap. It is very comfortable to play though, and if you are the kind of player who rests their arm on the upper body wing (which is easy to do with this bass) neck dive will not be a problem at all. #3 - A Volume/Blend/Tone control set would suit me better than V/V/T, but that's easily changed and YMMV. Another minor complaint is that there are only two options with this bass - Sunburst/Rosewood or White/Rosewood. This is done undoubtedly to keep the price low, but a Candy Apple Red/Maple option with chrome hardware and pickup covers would take this bass to another level entirely, as far as I am concerned. If you're thinking about buying this bass, don't hesitate. IT's well worth what you'll pay for it, and Sweetwater's service is an added bonus. Bravo Epi and Sweetwater. close [-] Also popular
