50th anniversary Though Gibson's Explorer is an immediately recognizable, sought-after instrument that graces stages and studios worldwide these days, it wasn't always such a popular design. In fact, when the Explorer first left the drawing board in 1958, many in the guitar world dismissed its "futuristic" design as gimmicky and inefficient. The line was discontinued in '59, but luckily for us, Gibson revived the Explorer. The guitar was championed by artists from diverse musical backgrounds, and the Explorer has been a favorite ever since (especially in heavy metal circles).
