Its dual 6" LF drivers and 1" HF driver receive a total of 180 watts of power from integrated Class D amplifiers. Onboard DSP not only controls the crossover, but provides extensive phase-correction and EQ functions inside the Studiophile DSM3.M-Audio Studiophile DSM3 Digital Active Reference Monitor at a Glance:
Onboard DSP The DSM3's powerful onboard DSP engine controls a complex fourth-order digital crossover. It also provides clear and accurate audio imaging by compensating for phase differences between the two drivers at the crossover point-delivering perfect acoustic alignment and exceptional imaging. And as a result of exhaustive tuning and listening sessions, the DSM3 monitor provides incredible tonal accuracy, excellent dynamic range and exceptionally low distortion. Tailor it to your environment Your listening environment and speaker placement greatly impact monitor performance. To ensure optimal monitoring in your studio, the onboard DSP also manages a broad range of customizable performance filter settings that allow you to tailor each speaker to your room. DSM3 offers DSP-controlled high and low frequency roll-offs along with an assortment of EQ settings, from Acoustic Space to Q, to help optimize the speaker for placement within even the most difficult acoustic environments. High-quality LF and HF drivers To ensure the greatest sonic clarity, the Studiophile DSM3 monitor features two custom-designed, 6.5-inch anodized aluminum cone woofers that actively reduce distortion by pushing the break-up mode out of the pass band for maximum low-frequency detail at any volume level. The 1-inch ferrofluid-cooled Neodymium tweeter is made of a soft Teteron dome, which strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and damping to produce a controlled high-frequency breakup out to 27kHz. The drivers and their carefully matched power amps provide a wide 37Hz-27kHz frequency response and outstanding dynamic range, ensuring that you hear an accurate representation of your audio at all volumes. The Studiophile DSM3 monitor utilizes a unique hybrid-midwoofer-tweeter-midwoofer (MTM) vertical array. In an MTM design, the dual midwoofers provide the surface area of a much larger speaker, while also providing greater heat dissipation that delivers better power handling. The DSM3 monitor embellishes this design by placing the woofers closer together—significantly reducing comb filtering artifacts and reducing the monitor’s profile and form factor. While positioning a traditional MTM monitor on its side puts the tweeter too close to the console surface and increases reflections, the DSM3 features an offset tweeter that delivers optimal performance when using either horizontal or vertical monitor placement. This makes the DSM3 monitor ideal for center as well as right and left channels—especially in smaller studios and/or environments where sightlines to video screens must be preserved. This unique design offers pristine imaging and a wide radiation pattern while giving you and your colleagues much more flexibility of placement and use. Integrated design Each component in the DSM3 monitor is customized to deliver outstanding sound quality in a compact footprint. Its sturdy cabinet is constructed from high-density material with internal bracing that renders it acoustically inert. The tuned bass-reflex dual-sided flared port offers increased SPL with extended bass response and low turbulence, while the carefully matched Class D power amps deliver ample power with low distortion and excellent efficiency. The custom-voiced components ensure hours of accurate listening without fatigue. And the professional analog and digital inputs support studio-grade audio resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz, revealing every detail that you've created with your digital audio workstation. ReviewsBest for the money that you'll find.

In a word--"perfect." Balanced mids, highs, and lows, and limitless volume with flat frequency response. All the onboard controls you could want, and a small enough form factor to fit on a desk with ... read more [+]a good size monitor. These monitors reveal the best and worst in mixes. I've gained a new appreciation for recording and sound engineering since purchasing these. Listening to Radiohead's "Pyramid Song," and comparing the recording to Metallica's S&M, I'm struck by not only the clarity, but I can hear every imperfection and every detail. Crisp but smooth highs, balanced mids with no "mud." Bass is so capable on these speakers, I cannot see any reason to purchase a subwoofer for the bass extension. Listening to well-recorded audio is truly an awe-inspiring experience, and recording with them is a humbling one. People have mentioned that they worry about the A-D-A conversion. Stop worrying--the onboard DSP is flawless. I mean that. Unless you have a $5k board/preamp, I can't see any reason why your experience wouldn't be improved by running a digital cable from your PC/deck to the DSM3's. I had a pair of Bx5a's before this (still have them), and loved them for basic use. They are the reason why I started looking at M-Audio seriously. Entry price point was good, so I tried them out. I still have a pair in my sound room for playing tracks while I practice. These DSM3's are superior in every respect. Seriously no comparison. Different class of speakers entirely--and they should be. They are worth twice what I paid for them (which was well below retail). If you have any ability to audition these, do it. You won't regret it. I purchased these when budget was no longer a consideration, and I can safely say I've not found a single other monitor in Guitar Center that comes close. The Bx5a's had great sound for what they are, but the heat that they produce even at moderate volumes is striking. In contrast, the DSM3's produce miniscule amounts of heat. After an extended high-volume session, I touched the back of the amplifiers, expecting the searing temperatures of the Bx5a's. To my surprise, they were actually room temperature to the touch. Don't know how they accomplished this, but it works. Clarity-5, Volume-5, Balance-5, Honesty-5, Frequency Response-5, Cabinet-5, Reliability-5, Power-5. I have seriously tried to find something wrong with these monitors, and really, the only thing I can think of is the price, which I'd gladly pay again. Cons--not free? close [-]

I wish these had been released under the Digidesign name- I think they've not been taken as seriously as they should have been. I've done A>B>C comparisons with DSM3's, DSM2's, and Dyn BM5A's*. I'm se... read more [+]lling my BM5A's because these speakers just sound so much better. Granted I was initially put off by the fact that the DSM's convert from A to D and back out, but honestly they are just a great sounding speaker (which is all that matters). I feel less concentrated on the speakers and more concentrated on the music when I audition using the DSM's. The vocals in all my favorite music sat exactly where I hoped they would, and my mixes have *improved* almost immediately with a very swift learning curve. The dual woofer design has pretty much killed any issues with modes in my 2 rooms that I've had. Everything seems balanced and controlled, yet free. The EQ controls are handy, though I'd rather tune a room, and not the speaker- not all environments are created equally though.January 9, 2010 Music Background: Musician, Engineer, Composer, Creator of Music for: Film, TV, Commercial, and Internet Applications I'm far more confident in my mixes now. If you're on the fence, just try them- I'm sold at the price. Just one thing... Not sure why there is a digital input on these when there is no remote available to control volume... It's the only reason they didn't score a perfect 5 stars. Call Matt Emmick @ ext 1249, he's the reason I keep coming back to Sweetwater. *Testing done with multiple types of music in the following chain: EAC ripped WAV files > Profire 2626 > Rosetta 800 > High end cables > Big Knob > Monitors. close [-] Sweetwater Advice
Carson McClainElectronic musicians rejoice!!! The M-Audio Studiophile DSM3 is probably the best electronic music speaker I've heard. It's detailed and loud, with tons of bass and balanced mids and highs. |
