From Our Research Team:

A Hybrid Hollowbody

Looking for a unique guitar that is part hollowbody and part solidbody? The Gibson Midtown Standard is the innovative and exciting hybrid you have been looking for. Gibson started with a solid mahogany body, which they chambered and then topped with a solid maple cap. You will love the feel of the new Midtown body shape, it is larger than an electric but smaller than the typical hollowbody. The '60s Slim-Taper neck shape gives you the comfortable playability you expect from a Gibson. A pair of '57 Classic humbuckers and a Bigsby vibrato finish off this unique axe.

Gibson Midtown Standard at a Glance:
  • Unique Body Construction and Size
  • '57 Classic Pickups
  • Bigsby Vibrato

Unique Body Construction and Size
The most unique aspect of the Gibson Midtown Standard is the innovative body. It is slightly larger than an electric guitar, yet smaller than the typical semi-hollowbody guitar. The body is made from solid mahogany and is strategically chambered for optimal sound and relieved weight. The Gibson Midtown Standard features a solid maple top with f-holes to give it a definitive semi-hollow look and feel.

'57 Classic Pickups
We all want a guitar with not only great tone, but flexible tone. The Gibson Midtown Standard has tone in bucketfuls. You get a '57 Classic in the neck featuring creamy, warm tones that you have come to know and love from vintage pickups, and the slightly hotter '57 Classic Plus for those a more driven and raunchy lead tone. Combined you get great funk and rhythm tones. The '57 Classic humbuckers make the Gibson Midtown Standard a formidable tone weapon.

Bigsby Vibrato
Finish off the Midtown Standard with a Bigsby vibrato and you get a total sonic tool that can tackle everything from jazz to rockabilly to punk and rock. A TonePros roller-saddle bridge helps keep you in tune when using the vibrato.

OK I've read a lot of blogs talking about the hardware and the blah blah etc. Nobody actually played this Super Powerful Gibson.
The guitar SCREAMS.... The neck is fantastic out of the box..Ple... read more [+]cked and ready to rock. Very comfortable and not heavy like my Les Paul.
The sustain is crazy..I play a note and put the guitar down and its still ringing like 5 seconds later. Support the US guitar companies...play this one of a kind axe. The Bigsby wham is really tight and works great.
Craftsmanship is superb..what a value ..USA made Gibson..nitro finish...PLecked...nice binding.....
The Hot 57's are strong without being harsh...nice clean tone through a Class A amp...really don't pass up on this new Gibby close [-]

A Masterpiece!

The Gibson Faded Red Midtown Standard finally arrived on September 15!

After ordering the Midtown from Sweetwater in early July, 2011, it was definitely worth the long wait! I may actually ... read more [+]be the first Sweetwater customer to receive the Faded Red Midtown Standard.

It is a dream guitar. It is flawless and beautiful to look at. The maple top is gorgeous in the Faded Red. The red is a slightly deeper, richer red tone than the Gibson publicity shots show.

I have never witnessed a rosewood fret board so fine. The rosewood has a reddish/brown tint to it. Gibson refers to it as “Grade A” rosewood. It puts my Gibson Les Paul Studio’s rosewood to shame.

The real mirror dot marker inlays are a pretty unique style bonus. A first I believe? The headstock really fits this guitar well. I have four Gibson guitars and all but the Melody Maker Flying V model have the same or very similar style headstocks. So the Midtown’s headstock looks different right from the start! The mother-of-pearl Gibson logo really shows well on this guitar!

The neck is very, very faaaast and it plays fantastic. I was not sure about the 60’s slim-style taper neck; however it feels very natural and slick. The action was set low and perfect. Not a buzz to be found. You just cannot beat the PLEK system for dressing the nut and/or frets.

The 57's sound incredible. From clear, crisp Jazz chord progressions to the saddest howling blues licks. Overdrive these pups and they sound unbelievable. The 57’s are just incredible and the best of the Gibson pickups line.

The main thing that separates the Midtown from the ES lineup is that the Midtown has a thick quarter inch solid maple top and solid mahogany sides and back. Not laminated like the ES line up. Plus it is a Flat-Top, and not an Arched-Top like the various ES models and a lot of other Gibson guitars. A totally different breed of guitar tones pour out of the Midtown!

I showed my Gibson Midtown to the Master Luthier that sets-up all of my new guitars and does a PLEK set-up on all of my Fender guitars. He played it for about a half-hour before I had to pry it out of his hands. He informed me that paying him to do a set-up on the Midtown would be a waste of my money. His exacts words were "it is perfect". That's a first for me not needing to have him set-up a new guitar. Gibson, I am impressed!

Big bonus: The Midtown actually stays in perfect tune after repeatedly using the Bigsby up-and-down very hard all day long. The “TonePros Tune-O-Matic” roller-type bridge really helps keep this beauty playing in perfect tune even after a lot of heavy Bigsby usage.

The blues just effortlessly flow out of this beauty like no other guitar I have ever played!

The Midtown is a 2011 Gibson Limited Edition guitar and will not be easy to find in the future. Not easy to get now as a matter of fact from the very Limited Edition nature of this masterpiece. Sweetwater comes through again. This is the fourth American Made Fender or Gibson electric guitar that I have purchased from Sweetwater since May, 2011. Also purchased a phenomenal Wechter Pathmaker Elite acoustic PLEK’d guitar from Sweetwater. The service is always top notch. The in-house inspection and set-up really makes sure that you receive a guitar in great condition. I usually receive the guitar or various accessories within two or three days after ordering online.

Sales Engineer Mike Arango really does a great job. Always keeps me updated on my order. Sweetwater is without a doubt the best deal around. Free shipping and no sales tax really helps too! close [-]
