Great pocket sized portable digital stereo recorder

by Albert from Mid Michigan
February 22, 2010
Music Background: Active musician for 40+ years.
I\'m not easily impressed, but Tascam has done a fantastic job. The DR-07 is perfect for recording practices, accoutic or electric. And moving files to or from a 16 channel recorder, or a personal ... read more [+]computer is amazingly easy. Did I mention it fits in your pocket. Put it on a tripod camera stand and let the music be recorded.
The only improvements would be a remote to control stop and record and stereo external mic inputs, but don\'t let that stop you from owning one. I reccommend the Tascam DR-07 to anyone wanting to purchase a high quality low cost portable stereo digital recorder. close [-]

A WONDERFUL Recorder! Absolutely wonderful!

by Paul T from Seattle, WA

Music Background: Hobbyist
Tascam nailed it with this recorder! Apparently they studied all of the quirks that competing units suffered from, (particularly the Zoom h2,) and fixed ALL of them before going to manufacture with th... read more [+]e DR-07.

Construction quality is excellent, sound quality is excellent, the menu system is excellent, it runs on AA batteries which I know I can always find, the display is excellent, (large and easy to read with a good backlight and clear icons,) there are no flimsy switches (take note, Zoom!) and the DR-07 feels like a quality piece of gear rather than a cheap plastic kids toy.

So far there's absolutely nothing I don't like about this unit. THANK YOU, Tascam, for paying attention to what the market needs and providing precisely that. You have hit a home run. close [-]

A fine little unit...

by Nick Parker from Fort Wayne, IN

Music Background: Hobbyist, Church Musician
The Tascam DR-07 is a fine little unit, so far. It took me three days to read the manual and play with all of the functions to get used to it. (I am not technically gifted...my grand kids had the ha... read more [+]ng of it right out of the box with out even looking at the manual!)

However, that being said... the mics are very sensitive and the recorded sound is clear, clean, and well balanced (especially, when using the auto setting). I love the abilities of play back in a different pitch at standard speed, or, at standard pitch in a different speed.

It has a delay record function to eliminate switch noise when turning it on for recording and it will also pre-record the first two seconds before the delay recording.

It is an amazing unit. I can layer at will and process any track (or multiple tracks) on my computer any way I choose and with any track (even from different files).

I was very apprehensive as I have always recorded in analog (on tape), but the Wave recording is very pleasing; and MP3 is great for compressing many, many, files which saves a lot of space for other things. I don't really worry too much about space issues as it came with a 2 Gig card and can be upgraded to a 32 Gig HDSD card (I think). But, pretty nice to have these abilities.

It eats batteries very fast (...about 3 1/2 hours for alkaline's). I am glad I bought the adapter (...wish Tascam wouldn't piece meal their products the way they do)... But, it is absolutely a must have. I will just use batteries for small, on-the-spot, mobile recordings. The rechargeable Nickle Metal Hydrides are a good idea for anyone who will use this in the field a lot. I think they run about $10-$15 just about anywhere.

The stand adapter was really handy for me, too. I don't have to worry about dropping it or finding a place to lay it or something to set it up on. Once I got things set up in my little make shift studio, I was able to press the record (or play) button and do my thing. It will capture everything...and is set up to filter out unwanted noises as well. Line in and Headphone out works as a monitor as well.

To get a better recording I would have had to spend several hundreds (actually, thousands) of dollars on mics and recording equipment.

For me, it was worth taking the extra time to learn the features and capabilities and set the environment up for optimum recordings with this little unit. It appears to be very compatible with both Mac and MS computer programs. Works well with free software programs like Krystal and more premium software like Magix. (I have tried it on both...no problems at all with file transfers or enhancements.)

Great looping features and splicing/threading capabilities, too. I will probably upgrade to the studio version and better mic-ing in the future. But, this has been a fantastic little unit for me to get ideas down with and have started putting together some songs that have been on hold for way too long. I think it will be a great practice tool as well.

I highly recommend it for any budget conscious person in need of a good portable recording device with computer friendly features. close [-]
