We've left this page up for reference only. Check out the great alternatives on this page or call toll-free (800) 222-4700 to speak with a Sweetwater Sales Engineer about similar products. From Our Research Team:Analog feel, digital results! The DP-02 from TASCAM is perfect for those of us that cut our teeth on cassette Portastudios back in the day, but now want to tap into the convenience of digital recording with a decidedly analog feel. The DP-02 8-track digital recorder makes recording fun, ditching menus for simple knobs and faders. Based on the legacy of over 25 years of cassette Portastudios, it sports dedicated controls for level, pan, effects send and EQ instead of the menu-cursor interface found on most other recorders. Make music with two hands with the DP-02!TASCAM DP-02 at a Glance:
Classic feel, modern convenience The DP-02 user interface is virtually identical to that of a classic Portastudio. Everything is handled old-school, with faders, knobs, and basic transport controls. Record up to 8 tracks on the built-in 40GB hard drive. A pair of XLR mic inputs includes phantom power for condenser mics and a direct guitar input. High and low EQ controls for level and frequency are provided for every channel. It also includes a multi-effects processor, stereo reverb, even a dedicated stereo channel for recording your mix. You can transfer tracks and mixes to a computer using USB 2.0, or burn a master disc in the CD drive. Don't spend hours configuring a computer for recording when you can afford a simple box dedicated to recording music. Just like the Portastudio of yore, the DP-02 makes recording as easy, affordable and fun! Extensive I/O The back panel of the DP-02 is loaded with all the I/O you'll need to create the perfect small project or demo. A pair of phantom powered mic/line inputs enable the use of any dynamic or condenser mic. A single send and a pair of returns are great for adding external effects processing. Finished mixes can be sent into your computer (or anywhere else) via RCA analog outputs or S/PDIF optical digital connectors, or through the USB port for computer backup. Burn mixes to the built-in CD-RW drive for instant playback-ready copies of your completed track. TASCAM DP-02 Features:

ReviewsA ton of features for the money

This is one powerful little workstation! If you're a songwriter or garage band wanting some great-sounding demos, you just can't beat this recorder for the cash! The on-board effects give you a lot of options, and it's very, very simple to use. The menus and controls are very user-friendly, and even though I'm using fairly cheap gear - Ovation guitar, Squier bass, Radio Shack mic - the quality and depth of my recordings is just amazing!! I love that you can go through the whole process beginning to end without using a computer - you can even burn a CD once you've mixed & mastered! Seriously, you can't beat this for an entry-level recorder. I LOVE IT!! close [-]

July 8, 2008 Music Background: Pro Musician, Recording Engineer, Music Producer Better than Reel to Reel

I dreamed of, what my older brother referred to as, sound on sound. He meant using two tape recorders(reel to reel) that enabled what the later cassette 4 tracks did. It cost thousands of dollars to p... read more [+]ull this off so we dreamed on. I worked in two studios here on the east coast that had beautiful equipment in the mid 70's but could not match the same great sound this DP-02 can. And it was 1200 dollars an hour to record there. Buy it. The editing features alone make it worth buying. Take your time, read, try, and don't worry everything can be redone if you make a mistake. I gave it 41/2 stars only because it's a bit hard to read the screen and the 24 track model has it's screen tilted up for a good reason. I tried analog, tape, small tape(cassettes, and digitals that were too hard and time consuming to enjoy. I just finished mixing 8 tracks. I bounced 4 into two then had 6 left. I filled them(could have bounced more) then cleared the history to free up the space the song would need on a 700MB CD-RW. After rehearsing the fader actions I would take the master write is finished, put to a CD, and played on any CD player to check it. If I'm not happy I can erase the CD and do another master mix..May 3, 2011 Music Background: Drums till 14, then guitar, then bass. Now keys. 49 yrs. I have access to a nice studio anytime I want, so I bought this mainly to do some demo recordings at home. That being said, this recorder is way better than I expected it would be. It is built reall... read more [+]y well, and actually has some weight to it. It's not built cheaply at all. It was really easy to get the hang of. After reading the manual and about 3 hours of messing around with it, I know my way around this thing completely. As far as the recording quality goes, get yourself some good quality mics and you will be set. This thing gives you great sounding recordings that are nice and clear. They don't sound like demo recordings at all, way better than I expected! It has a lot of built in effects if you are into that sort of thing, but I mainly record without using the effects. My only complaint with the effects is that you can't assign the effects after you have recorded something, they can only be assigned to the inputs before you record. Unless I'm doing something wrong there? The auto punch in and punch out feature is great, it makes it so you don't need a manual footswitch to do punch ins. The built in metronome is great too. The only real downside to this system is you can only record two inputs at a time, but I knew that when I bought it. If you are thinking about getting this -do it, you won't regret it. close [-]
January 16, 2010 Music Background: Hobbyist. -Play in bands, record at studio, play live shows. Great sound, great operation

This is my first multitrack recorder. I have no idea what I'm doing. But it doesn't seem to matter. Tascam made this very simple. Paired up with a drum machine, here I am making pretty decent-sounding... read more [+] recordings. Yes I spent some money on decent mikes/cords and I use a quality amp and guitars, but let's face it if you're going to record seriously, why would you spend $500 on this if you're not willing to dive in with the other equipment? The DP-02 perfectly captures your sound, and is very tolerant of you wanting to redo a passage dozens of times until it has the "feel". If anything happens to my computer I have all my songs on the 40 gig hard drive. Plus, decent reverb for the vocals. Now all I have to do is use a simple WAV editor to make some minor adjustments and I'm finished. I bought this because I did not want to deal with DAW menus- I wanted the ability to adjust things without turning to the computer. The next step up from this is renting studio time. But what do you do 2 days after you get home from the studio and a riff and before you know it a whole song comes out of your fingers? Screw that. It's 2:30am, you're not booking studio time, you're already recording CD-quality music and mixing and mastering it yourself. Screw computers. They'll just end up giving you an error message anyway. close [-]
