Great 7 string from Schecter!

Granted, Schecter is a rather unique entity. Granted, a lot of the designs are.. Japanesish, if there is such a word, BUT, last week I received my Damien Elite 7 FR (for Floyd Rose trem) Schecter, and... read more [+] I am delighted. For a change, the design is very current and MOR; the fit and trim are excellent. Flawless I might add. The finish is a perfect, flawless Black Cherry aka Crimson Red. The Floyd Rose whammy/trem is as near perfect as a FR can get. The EMG silver (81) and gold (85) are very good (driven) to excellent (Clean), but could be stronger.

Were I designing the 81 I would make it with a bit more bite, BUT, you can adjust that with your pedal or pre-amp settings. Clear, the EMG actives are about as pretty on chords as you have ever heard. low driven notes have heft, and the highs (high E string and above) are very nice. But you do have to push it a bit.

What am I missing here? mahogany body with a great maple cap, beautiful quilted black cherry finish, it weighs almost 8 lb, so it could lose a pound or 2 without my complaint. The strings (10 gauge) are pretty hefty and a chore if you are a blues string puller like me who prefers 9 gauge and 8 gauge slinkies. the fretboard is adequate, and of good design and execution. And the price? Outrageously good. So what is it that prevents this from being a two thousand dollar axe? Beats me. This is an excellent deal, and quite a return on your investment.

The baritone nature of the 7 string make this a real jewel, as the low B string really adds heavy beef to your chords and riffing. You can do the death metal thing well on this, but remember, Dance Dance Dance by the Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys was done on a 7 string guitar. Its deep, clean guitar riff was divine and plenty hip. Almost like low and dbl low C notes on a piano.

It does need a case, and should be available in more colors, like, oh, Cobalt Blue. Anything but Schecter's staple: black. But even the case for the Damien Elite 7 FR is inexpensive. This axe breaks new ground in the realm of affordable quality guitars.

So there are many other ways to utilize that 7th string than head banging and metal. I'd say the limits of the 7 string are just now beginning to be tested. This guitar to me is a fine bargain. I have yet to find anything to complain about. One of Sweetwater's finest secrets. close [-]
