This set cannot be beat for the price. The DM5 module is time-proven and carries enough sounds to make this set very serviecable for both live and studio use. Overall, I would give the set a 5 out of ... read more [+]5 if Alesis would do a little work on the out-of-the box setup. March 31, 2009 Music Background: Experienced hobbyist The feel of the stick hitting the cymbals is very realistic. Although the drum pads use real heads, they are up against the trigger mechanism, so don't feel as natural as the Roland set we have at church, but this set didn't cost $6,000 either. They feel a lot more natural than the rubber pads. The module comes out of the box with 20 kits, but none of them are usable as-is on this set. The snare drum second trigger (rim shot) is set to trigger one or another of the cymbal patches on pretty much every set. I know the module has been around for a lot longer than the kit with Surge cymbals and dual-trigger pads, but it doesn't seem as though it would be too much trouble to configure the module with sample kits that actually match the hardware it ships with. The same type of thing with the hi-hat open/close patches and the ride cymbal/bell strike patches. They didn't make sense. The volume settings on the patches were odd as well. Take the kit and record it and you will have a crash cymbal that is all out of proportion to the rest of the set volume-wise. If you spend some time with this set, you will like it more and more. It has a lot more velocity sensitivity than I would have thought listening to the demos on the internet. All in all, I would buy this kit again, but the experience would be much more pleasurable if Alesis would have made a real drummer play with the module and then use what they come up with as sample factory kits. close [-] Alesis DM5 kit

Singer/Songwriter Surge cymbal triggering needs tweeking, volume and sensitivity also needs attention. I think with some more tweeking, the set will be very playable. Set came with black plastic looking heads. Picture shows white ones. Frame is sturdy enough. Assembly is straightforward. So far I like it, now lets see how durable it is. DM5 Brain allows adjustment of many parameters. This is my first electronic set and these are all first impressions. close [-]
