From Our Research Team:

Convenient 2-Track CD & Flash Recording!

Whether your goal is to record audio and make CDs to present a performance or composition for evaluation, to advance your playing skills with the help of high-tech learning tools, to preserve and archive important audio, or to capture unforgettable moments like concerts or public events, the CD-2 will do the job quickly and simply - and with professional-quality results.

Easy Recording
Recording is a breeze on the CD-2. A high-quality stereo microphone is built in for top-grade, on-the-spot recording; additional mics can be plugged in as well. The CD-2 records directly onto CDs. So start playing, and as soon as you're done you'll have a finished, professional CD! For extra long recording times (complete concerts, church services, etc.), the CD-2 offers recording to popular card (CompactFlash) media, and supports up to 2 GB capacity for approximately six hours of recording time at 16 Bit/44.1 kHz linear mode.

Edit Your Recordings!
When recording to CompactFlash, your audio can be edited using functions such as Audio Level Adjustment, Song Erase, and Trim for cutting out silence between songs. Once you have everything the way you want, you can burn your performance directly to CD.

Music-Training Support
Students will appreciate the CD-2's usefulness as an educational/practice tool, thanks to its built-in stereo speakers, speed/pitch control, tuner, and metronome. You can easily record lessons or musical passages, and play them back at a slower tempo while retaining the original pitch. Or change the pitch of the audio and play along indifferent key signatures. The CD-2 provides some great learning advantages for all levels of students.

Convenient Connections
The CD-2 makes it easy to get audio in and out. For ultra convenience, a stereo microphone is built-in, so all you have to do is point and shoot. Or, if desired, you can plug in external mics with the two XLR inputs, complete with phantom power. A pair of RCA inputs and outputs is provided for convenient connection to electronic piano, CD player or stereos; using the 1/4-inch inputs you can plug guitars, mics, and other instruments directly into the CD-2. And if you like, you can use the built-in guitar effects or reverb to greatly enhance your guitar or vocal sounds.

Onboard Effects
Enhance your recordings with the CD-2's lineup of professional audio effects, such as reverb, EQ, and compression. Make your recordings sound more ambient and lush, or punchy and crisp. Special tools are also provided for guitar and vocals, and the onboard Mastering effects help you put the final polish on your audio before you burn it CD. You won't believe how good your recordings can sound, and how friendly the CD-2's tools are to use.

Roland CD2

Music Background:
I teach clarinet and saxophone in a university. I was looking for a recorder that was portable and that I could record directly onto a CD at the touch of a button. The Roland CD2 does exactly that and... read more [+] lots more. There are two ways to record-onto a Compact Flash memory card and directly onto the CD. When recording onto the CD, you get some very slight noise from the spinning of the CD, though this is barely audible, but for a selective listener, one can use the compact flash to record and you get a completely clean sound with no noise. There are two built-in mics that come factory set to adjust levels automatically. That can be set to manuel as well. There are also some neat little features, like a metronome and a tuner that can be used either visually or with a tone. The sounding tone can be adjusted to any pitch and is quite loud. I have used it to warm up playing long tones and tuning the intervals. I can hear the tone over the sound of my clarinet or saxophone. There is also an adjustable volume control for the sound output (there are built-in speakers as well). The unit comes with a 128mg compact flash. I bought a 2 gig compact flash at Best Buy for about $130 which supposedly holds about 7 hours of music at a normal recording quality. The compact flash is handy because you can record and erase things at will and hear things back immediately without finalizing and wasting a CD. This is very handy for teaching. I just hook up the machine to my stereo system with simple RCA plugs and when I record a student, I let them hear themselves immediately on the stereo speakers. The quality of the mics is spectacular. The unit is light enough that I carry it to recitals and record performances. When you turn the machine on, you have to press the Mic select button once to activate that internal mics. I learned this the hard way the first time and missed part of a concert I was trying to record because the mics were not activated. There are also jacks for external mics. In fact, you could hook an entire multi-track mixing board up to this unit and use it as a sort of hard disk recorder (on the compact flash card). There are a few editing features such as the ability to cut out silence between tracks (only when recorded on the compact flash). When recording on the compact flash, you need to select the tracks to transfer to the CD to then burn and finalize. I had to follow the manual a few times to get the hang of this, but it is straight forward once you do it a couple of times. To transfer about 1 hour of music from compact flash to a finished CD takes about 15-20 minutes of write and burn and finalize time. But, when recording directly onto the CD, the writing is in real time when it is being recorded, so the finalizing process to burn the CD takes about only a minute. This has been very handy at concerts. The unit works on power from the outlet, no batteries. Also, the headphone jack is a 1/4 inch, not a stereo mini-plug, so I keep an adapter in the case.

I highly recommend this. It seems to be well made. I have also tried the Marantz and though this is an excellent product also, the Marantz does not have a compact flash and this has turned out to be an extremely handy feature. Plus the Roland seems to have a sturdier casing and overall sturdier feel to the buttons-seems like it will hold up better. The Marantz, though, has two CD drives, which is handy. Oh, the Roland and the Marantz both have pitch control and the ability to slow down a CD recording but keep the same pitch. Again, another handy feature for music teachers and students. close [-]
