September 2, 2006 Music Background: Gig Occasionally Killer tones
by Francis Reyes from Manila, Philippines
i'm a professional musician, playing gigs quite regularly with my band The Dawn (the band's been around for 20 years). I'm a Queen fan but was skeptical about this pedal simply because i do believe th... read more [+]at using someone else's tone instead of looking for your own is lame. i tried this pedal in a store and was pretty impressed of course, but i'm not Brian May (nobody but Brian is!). when i started to twist knobs though, i was hooked! the modelled May tones are all there, but you can modify them. when all knobs are set to the center positions, those are the basic modelled tones, and you can pretty much take it from there. i generally use the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' green mode, with more mids and bass, and higher gain and that's pretty much the distortion i've been looking for all my life: high gain and metallic, but warm and honky. and HUGE!!! (the modelling knob i usually set to 1 0'clock; i avoid using it all the way to 'HB' since that will model Brian's sound too much). the nice thing is if you roll back the volume knob on your guitar, it actually cleans up! from there you can get a distorted tone if you strike the strings hard, just like on a good tube amp. the pedal is kinda noisy though... with the settings i use, there's a bit of hiss. i used a footswitch to toggle between modes and programs but the changes aren't fast enough for live performances (there's a momentary silence between changes). i only use one sound from the Red Special live, so that's okay for me. (i run the pedal in front of a Zoom G9, which is where i do the delays, modulations, and a teeny bit of EQ to boost the signal a bit for solos. otherwise, the Zoom is pretty much set flat). January 10, 2008 Music Background: Pro Musician wish there was a way to store your own tones on a separate bank or something. this pedal has excellent basic (well not quite 'basic' but you get the point) tones that you can sculpt enough to get your own sounds (based on Brian's sounds of course). it's my main distortion pedal now, and as Brian (and Digitech) promised in the manual, it does inspire you to make your own tones, and you can. close [-] Sweetwater Advice
Chad ByersThe Guesswork is over! Need good tone with plenty of flexibility? This pedal can do it for you! Stick with the tones Brian came up with or create your own based off of the classic Queen sounds of the past.
