2 x 12 not exactly like the vintage construction

Okay, I needed a 2 x 12 cab for a gig and didn't have time to make my own as I usually do, so I opted for the Fender Band-Master 212. I figured I could sell the Celestions that were in there and load... read more [+] it up with my JBL K120s, and then I'd have a fairly decent cab for fewer $$ than I could buy from Mojo or other places.

The cabinet is constructed fairly decently and the Tolex is put on cleanly and evenly. However, I was really expecting a removable back like the vintage Fender cabs, so I was a disappointed to find that speakers are front loaded and back panel is not removable. Further disappointing is the lack of velcro tabs to pull the front grille cloth frame from the cab itself. If you don't have the right tool, you can damage the front edge of the Tolex. I ended up adding the velcro strips myself.

Once I removed the Celestions, I was further disappointed to find that there was no batting material in the interior of the cabinet, nor was there the standard plywood divider found in vintage Fender cabinets. This explained the hollow, woody sound I kept hearing when I first played through the cab. Once I stuffed the cab with fiberglass batting and loaded the cab with my JBLs, I had a great sounding cabinet to compliment my 66 BF Bassman head.

Once I find the time, I'll also install the plywood divider, but this may be difficult due to the construction of the cab.

This is an average and somewhat disappointing sounding cabinet at first, but once it's stuffed with batting it comes alive. I don't know why Fender didn't pay attention to this detail, nor why they didn't add the velcro strips to make it easier to remove the grille cloth frame. close [-]
