130-watt Bi-amplified Studio Reference Monitors

If you're looking for more powerful monitors for desktop systems, the magnetic shielding of the M-Audio BX8a active monitors makes them excellent for use near computers and other signal generating equipment.

M-Audio Studiophile BX8a at a Glance:
  • Two-way, 130-watt, magnetically shielded studio reference monitors.
  • 8” Kevlar low-frequency drivers.
  • 1” natural silk high-frequency drivers.
  • Bi-amplified, integrated cabinet design.

Meet the New BX8a
Over the years, Studiophile reference monitors have earned a great reputation with recording professionals around the world. The BX8a updates the critically acclaimed BX8 nearfields. Topping the improvements list are 8” curved Kevlar low-frequency drivers — a technology usually reserved for monitors bearing a higher price tag. Of course, they’re coupled with M-Audio's time-proven high-temperature voice coils and damped rubber surrounds for durability and fidelity. Magnetically shielded 1” natural silk domes give the BX8s a high-end that’s both clear and easy on the ears. Custom-tuned crossovers distribute 130 Watts of bi-amplified power for optimal frequency handling by each driver. Hear for yourself why Studiophiles have become “standard issue” reference monitors.

Kevlar LF Drivers
To insure a lifetime of service, M-Audio constructed the BX8a’s 8” low-frequency driver from woven Kevlar—the same material bulletproof vests are made from. (Kevlar is typically reserved for more expensive monitors.) M-Audio engineers also created a curved conical design that improves room dispersion. High-damping rubber surrounds insure that the cone reaches exactly its optimal excursion for accurate reproduction. And the BX8a's high-temperature voice coils guarantee that your monitors will deliver full performance no matter how many hours you use them.

Silk-dome HF Drivers with FerroFlow™
The M-Audio BX8a's high-frequency domes are made from natural silk to counter the ringing that is inherent in the stiffer metallic materials common to other monitors. M-Audio’s FerroFlow™ technology uses ferrofluid liquid cooling to dissipate heat for maximum efficiency and extended usage.

Bi-amped Efficiency
Active (powered) monitors allow designers to optimize amplification for other components such as speakers and cabinets. And by using two separate power amps and a finely tuned crossover, the BX8a’s bi-amped design insures that both the high- and low-frequency drivers are each sent only the frequencies they reproduce most efficiently.

Rear-ported cabinet design
The BX8a’s cabinet is integrally designed with its other components for optimal performance—right down to rounded corners for reduced edge diffraction and superior imaging. Custom rear-port design eliminates the turbulence and resulting distortion caused when front ports project low frequency waves in the same path as the speakers’ direct signal.

Fantastic Set of Nearfields

Be warned about two things - these puppies are bigger than you expect (OK bigger than the speakers they were replacing) and they don't hide anything.

I've waited a couple of weeks to c... read more [+]omplete this review because I was waiting for something negative to happen - it hasn't. I mix music for Sony, PBS, and a host of corporate clients, and these are a welcome addition to my studio. They were supposed to just replace a small set of bookshelf speakers, but I predict that they will become my main mixing speakers too. A very warm sound with extended highs and lows that doesn't sound artificial at all - just sounds real. I'm very pleased with what was mostly an impulse buy.

These come VERY highly recommended!!!! close [-]

The M-Audio BX8A's are an incredible pair of monitors for the money. They are built like a tank! I've read several reviews where people say the high end is too much, but I surely don't hear it myself.... read more [+] They sound quite well balanced to me. My older mixes took on a whole new level of clarity. I played CD's through them and they sounded excellent. I highly recommend these monitors! close [-]

Our Customers Say...

I can talk to my Sales Engineer about any piece of equipment, and he always steers me in the right direction. He truly knows what he's talking about, and he never tries to over-sell me on anything. If he worked in the Nashville area, I'd probably owe him about 20 dinners by now!
