From Our Research Team:Tight, Focused Bass for your Studio at a Great Price! The affordable M-Audio BX10s active subwoofer is compatible with any powered direct-field monitor system thanks to its 50-200Hz variable crossover. The BX10s features a 240-watt internal amplifier in a compact, convenient package that drives a 10" composite driver that produces full, tight bass response for accurate listening. Speaking of accurate listening it also features a defeat switch that enables you to A/B your mixes with and without subwoofer. Great for smaller computer-based studios, it is also video shielded for use near CRTs. So, if you're looking for a bass-boost in your stereo or surround mixes, take the M-Audio BX10s for a spin - you won't be disappointed!M-Audio BX10s Subwoofer at a Glance:
Compact, Active Subwoofer Products like the M-Audio's BX5a and BX8a are designed to work well as full-range monitors. Yet when they reproduce bass-heavy material at high volumes, it can be both taxing on the speakers and fatiguing to the listener. However, when they're used in tandem with the BX10s, the system can comfortably reproduce full-range 20Hz-20kHz signals at any volume without stressing any components. To accomplish this, the BX10s employs a 10" composite cone of treated paper and fiberglass, custom reflex cabinet and a powerful 240 watt amplifier. While the BX10s is designed as a low-frequency complement to the BX5a or BX8a active reference monitors in a professional two-channel or multichannel system, it can integrate easily with any powered direct-field monitors. Variable 50-200Hz Crossover The BX10s accommodates the stereo outputs from a mixer, and the users' main monitors then connect to outputs on the sub. The internal crossover network of the BX10s splits the signal at a user-defined crossover frequency (50-200Hz), routing everything below it to the internal sub and everything above it to the main speakers. This significantly improves fidelity because the components aren't tripping over each other to reproduce the same frequency-and each only has to deliver frequencies to which it is ideally suited. The variable crossover makes it possible to tailor the bass response in a monitoring environment in order to achieve the most accurate acoustic response-and there are even easy setting for compliance with Dolby Digital®, DTS® and THX® specifications. Subwoofer Defeat The BX10s includes a subwoofer defeat function that completely removes the subwoofer amp, speaker, and crossover from the signal path-sending the full-bandwidth program to the connected direct-field monitors. By plugging the included SP-1 non-latching footswitch into the footswitch input on the back of the BX10s, users can control this function dynamically while playing back material-even from across the room. With the BX10s temporally bypassed, it becomes easy to judge how a mix will sound in an environment without a dedicated subwoofer. M-Audio BX10s Features:
The M-Audio BX10s active subwoofer delivers the kind of bass response necessary for today's music, film, and multimedia projects - at a much lower price point!

ReviewsFantastic subwoofer!

After many years of playing different instruments, setting up and installing sound systems and learning about the art of recording, I've culminated all my experiences in setting up my own home studio.... read more [+]December 29, 2007 Music Background: Thirty year musician and sound hound Always trying to balance cost with quality (although quality usually takes precedence, I'm very picky that way), and after many hours of research, I finally settled on this sub. It turned out to be the right choice! The selling point for me (buying it sight unseen),was the sheer amount of features that it has. It is one of the few subs that has a defeat switch, which is a great feature when you want to a/b your tracks. Since most sound sytems these days include subs anyways, it's a good idea to hear your music on the same type of system, but you can still compare it to a non-sub system. This sub is coupled to my Event SP6's and I have to say that it is a great match. I run both speakers and the sub gain at 12 o'clock and the balance is perfect. The crossover point is at 50hz. Of course, every room will be different and you'll need to experiment with levels and positioning. The manual expresses the importance of placement and after trying a couple of different positions I found this to make a big difference in the sound. I used a measurement mic and a spectrum analyzer to help me get the frequencies as flat as possible and the end result is excellent. The sound is tight but warm and full and very accurate. For any cost, this is an excellent subwoofer. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would spend more money on anything else unless you needed more power. But this sub has PLENTY of it. It rattles the windows in my basement at half the volume! You will not be disappointed with this speaker! close [-] WOW

Well I have now spent 48 hours with this thing and completely love it. It took some fine tuning, but it has blown me away. I was a little concerned that it would color the sound going to my monitors a... read more [+] bit, but I was completely wrong. I have had a few devices from M-Audio that did this in the past. September 16, 2006 Music Background: Aspiring Pro I had considered getting the original SBX that M-Audio carried about a year ago, but decided against it as a friend of mine was unhappy with it. I wasn't looking for a $1000+ sub so I held off. When I learned about this thing being released I was really curious. My friend @ M-Audio said it worked really well with their BX8a's and he assured me that it would work awesome with my Event Precission 8's. Glad I listened to him. The feet were a great idea, however I will be doing the same as the other person that gave their review did, pick up a subdude. I have wood floors in the studio so it only makes sense. Setup and config were super quick and easy. Tracks that sounded amazing on my monitors hit hard with this thing. I am extremely happy to have made this purchase. Only giving it a 4.5 as room position ing and subdude have not been finalized. close [-] WOW

February 5, 2008 Music Background: Very good - quite an upgrade.
by Nathanael Davenport from Rexburg, ID
I upgraded to the BX10s from M-Audio's former LFE offering, the SBX. Being priced the same (at the moment), I don't know why anybody would buy the SBX over this. Just looking at the specs and the shee... read more [+]r size difference would make the choice obvious.August 28, 2006 Music Background: Recording Engineer - Rock House Recording. This is a big monster compared to the SBX, almost 1.5 times bigger. The included "feet" to isolate it's contact points with the ground are a nice touch, but I still put it on a SubDude. I also really like the included pedal to bypass the subwoofer, crossover and all, so I can mix just with the satellites. It's frequency response is quite impressive, though in my particular control room I can't quite make out or feel the 20Hz quoted "low end" of this thing, but at 21Hz it appears quite clearly. To my knowledge, there is no other subwoofer in this price range that can reach down so far. I don't know enough about reflex port design to know if M-Audio just doesn't know what they're doing or if the concept itself is fundamentally flawed, but even this subwoofer, in all it's hulking glory, experienced port turbulence from 30-20Hz in the sine wave sweep test I did at just slightly over moderate volume; and being so fed up with the horrendous reflex port performance of my last M-Audio subwoofer, I just stuck part of a bed sheet into the reflex port and my problem was gone, with a negligible performance hit on the response of the BX10s. I just don't get the reflex port thing - in my uneducated, but hopefully valued opinion. The crossover works very well, much better than having separate crossovers for the satellites and the subwoofer, as the SBX did. However, M-Audio dropped the continuously variable phase adjustment that was on the SBX. There are now only two choices - 0º and 180º. All in all, this is a very impressive offering for the price. Unless you have a budget over $800 for a subwoofer, I would recommend this product over anything else beneath that price point. And yes, you can get plenty of complaints from neighbors if you want to. ;-) close [-]
