If You Are Loookling At This, You Need It

If you write songs on guitar this machine will absolutely feed your creativity. If all you ever do with it is use it as a headphone amp, playing along with the built-in rhythm tracks, it will make yo ... read more [+]u a better player. The number of rhythm patterns and guitar sounds alone will open up your playing to styles you may never have played with before. And the next thing you know, you'll be writing new music.
Musicians and non-musicians are blown away by the clarity of the recordings the BR-600 can produce. While no one is fooled into thinking that's a live drummer, there are enough pattern variations (fills, alternate verse patterns, etc.) to keep it interesting. Not sure how you would record a real drum kit on this - you're only using a max of 2 mics at a time.
I found that my Tech 21 VT-Bass direct box was a must for bass tones. Not that the built-in ones are unusable for demo work - just not real happening to my ears.
Guitar and vocal effects range from great to bizarre. Built-in mics do a very good job. You can easily connect RCA outputs to a reciever and monitors - headphones sometimes sound great, then you burn a CD and the vocal is buried. Either way, it's a snap to fix anything, remix, remaster.
Owner's manual takes some time to digest and could have been twice as long. Some questions are best answered by trial and error on the machine. You will want a bigger memory card. You will also want to keep some kind of log of your track info, effects used, settings, etc. - a big help when you decide to rerecord a section later, or something sounds great on CD and you're not sure how you did it. I made myself a Studio Log sheet on Excel, and will forward a copy to Kurt Martin at Sweetwater to share if you ask him.
Bottom line is, after one month I had 8 tunes burned to CD working only a few hours here and there on nights and weekends. A friend with an in-home recording studio offered to demo up 2 songs for me for $250. You do the math. close [-]

For such a little device, it packs a big punch!
Every home musician or small band should have one of these handy. The built-in microphones, line-in and guitar-in inputs allow you to start reco ... read more [+]rding as soon as you digest the hefty users manual.
The onboard effects are plenty and sound good, as does the rhythm machine. A little experience programming drum machines will help a lot. close [-]
This thing is so sweet!!

This is my 4th attempt at getting a nice multi-track practice recorder for guitar playing. I've had Opcode's stuff (with an Audiomedia III card, & Lexicon's defunct interface), and Steinberg + Lexico ... read more [+]n's interface and Digidesign Protools + a rackmount interface, and finally a Tascam multi-track interface (with faders and all talking to Steinberg on the PC).
But all of those had way too much overhead and were tied to a computer and a hassle to use to be with me whereever I jammed.
This thing is so small, easy to use, and the stereo condenser mics sound fantastic. It is PERFECT for jamming, recording riffs, and the drum machine is wild! So many great built in genre-specific patterns plus the ability to enter and edit my own, with different kits.
It looked good in the write-ups, but actually having it and using it, I am even much more impressed. close [-]
Update of Previous Review - Drum Machine Options

I am totally blown away by the BR-600's drum machine, specifically the arranger mode.
Perhaps all dedicated drum machines provide "arranger" capability, I don't know, never owned one. ... read more [+]
Quite by accident I laid down a rhythm track for a Praise and Worship song. When I played the guitar and rhythm tracks, the rhythm track "figured" out where to put fills, turnarounds, etc. I was completely blown away.
I have not fully explored the arranger mode, but evidently you can setup an intro, verses, fills, and ending. I just accidently used one of the preset arrangements and it worked perfectly for a 4/4 song.
Very cool. Very cool indeed. close [-]
