If you write songs on guitar this machine will absolutely feed your creativity. If all you ever do with it is use it as a headphone amp, playing along with the built-in rhythm tracks, it will make yo... read more [+]u a better player. The number of rhythm patterns and guitar sounds alone will open up your playing to styles you may never have played with before. And the next thing you know, you'll be writing new music.April 24, 2009 Music Background: 20-year part time guitar player, bass player, songwriter Musicians and non-musicians are blown away by the clarity of the recordings the BR-600 can produce. While no one is fooled into thinking that's a live drummer, there are enough pattern variations (fills, alternate verse patterns, etc.) to keep it interesting. Not sure how you would record a real drum kit on this - you're only using a max of 2 mics at a time. I found that my Tech 21 VT-Bass direct box was a must for bass tones. Not that the built-in ones are unusable for demo work - just not real happening to my ears. Guitar and vocal effects range from great to bizarre. Built-in mics do a very good job. You can easily connect RCA outputs to a reciever and monitors - headphones sometimes sound great, then you burn a CD and the vocal is buried. Either way, it's a snap to fix anything, remix, remaster. Owner's manual takes some time to digest and could have been twice as long. Some questions are best answered by trial and error on the machine. You will want a bigger memory card. You will also want to keep some kind of log of your track info, effects used, settings, etc. - a big help when you decide to rerecord a section later, or something sounds great on CD and you're not sure how you did it. I made myself a Studio Log sheet on Excel, and will forward a copy to Kurt Martin at Sweetwater to share if you ask him. Bottom line is, after one month I had 8 tunes burned to CD working only a few hours here and there on nights and weekends. A friend with an in-home recording studio offered to demo up 2 songs for me for $250. You do the math. close [-] Great recorder for small bucks!

February 27, 2007 Music Background: Amateur musician of 30 yrs. But all of those had way too much overhead and were tied to a computer and a hassle to use to be with me whereever I jammed. This thing is so small, easy to use, and the stereo condenser mics sound fantastic. It is PERFECT for jamming, recording riffs, and the drum machine is wild! So many great built in genre-specific patterns plus the ability to enter and edit my own, with different kits. It looked good in the write-ups, but actually having it and using it, I am even much more impressed. close [-] Update of Previous Review - Drum Machine Options

I am totally blown away by the BR-600's drum machine, specifically the arranger mode. July 10, 2008 Music Background: Extreme Hobbyist Perhaps all dedicated drum machines provide "arranger" capability, I don't know, never owned one. ... read more [+] Quite by accident I laid down a rhythm track for a Praise and Worship song. When I played the guitar and rhythm tracks, the rhythm track "figured" out where to put fills, turnarounds, etc. I was completely blown away. I have not fully explored the arranger mode, but evidently you can setup an intro, verses, fills, and ending. I just accidently used one of the preset arrangements and it worked perfectly for a 4/4 song. Very cool. Very cool indeed. close [-] Why Did I Not But It Sooner

I have two digital computer-based recording systems with tons of plug-ins. They offer me unlimited tracks, easy editing, and every possible amp and effect known to man. So why would I spend $300 on an... read more [+]other recording system?July 1, 2008 Music Background: Extreme Hobbyist In a word, portability. I wanted something to use a musical notepad that I could carry anywhere in the house, on the road, etc. I had a hard time choosing between the BR and the Tascam DP-02CF. The DP has several great features missing on the BR. However, those features are covered by my computer-based setup. However, the BR runs on batteries, includes very usable internal stereo mics, and is incredibly small. So I went with the BR. Much like my 20-year old cassette based porta-studio, I am back to recording everything: practice sessions, ideas, etc. I find this extremely beneficial to improving as a guitarist. The recorder does not lie. It picks up the mistakes, the tone, everything. To improve your playing, next to playing with another guitarist and taking lessons, nothing beats recording and reviewing your practice sessions. The BR-600 is easy to use. It does require that you read through the user manual to understand the layers of menus, but it is quite intuitive. The internal mics do a great job. I own a number of dynamic and condenser mics and find the internal mics to be adequate for recording ideas and practice sessions. You do have to be careful with effects and the volume settings to not pickup too much white noise. For serious recording, I connect condenser mics via a mixer or my TonePort UX2. The effects and amps (missing on the tascam Dp-02CF) are excellent and allow to pretty much fully master a song right on the unit. The drum/rhythm machine is very cool and sounds better than expected. You can choose preset rhythms or create your own by tapping the marked buttons. Finally, the sound quality is pretty much as good as you're gonna get with 24-bit resolution at 44/1KHz sampling. I purchased the BR-600 from Sweetwater. It arrived the day after I ordered it. My only gripe: Sweetwater should list three additional accessories for the BR-600: 1GB Compact Flash card, PSA-120 power adapter and the Hosa 153 "Y" cable for connecting to a sound device that uses 1/4" connectors. I am using a plain jane 1GB compact flash card with no problems. The BR did not recognize my 2GB cards. Though it negates the purpose for my BR-600 purchase, I have connected my TonePort UX2 to the BR-600 stereo inputs. This allows me access to all of the dozens of Line6 amps, effects, and preamps and allows me to use my $$$ condenser mics. In summary, the BR-600 is a great songwriting and practice tool. It is also excellent as a limited (8) track recorder. For large scale recording and limited funds, you still can't beat a computer-based system, but for a completely portable, all in one workstation, the BR-600 fits the bill quite nicely. close [-]
