From Our Research Team:

Turn Your Computer Into A Live Drum Studio!

BFD has emerged as one of the front-runners in the world of sample-based drum software. BFD was recorded in the drum room at a top California recording studio by professional engineer Steve Duda (NIN, Pitchshifter, A Perfect Circle) using over $50,000 worth of microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG and others. The drums used range from the 1920s to 2002, and include both classics and rarities. The resulting sample set is nothing short of amazing, ranking BFD among the industry leaders of virtual instruments.

FXpansion BFD At-a-Glance:
  • MIDI Grooves add flexibility
  • Humanize for less machine gun effect
  • Great for any style of music
  • Works with virtually any software

MIDI Grooves add flexibility
Not only useful as a sound source for your own drum programming, BFD also incorporates a comprehensive library of ready-to-use MIDI Grooves with different styles, feels and time signatures. The library features both programmed grooves and MIDI recordings of real drummers, including top UK session drummer Chris Dagley (Jamiroquai, Lalo Schifrin, Ella Fitzgerald, Eric Clapton, Chaka Khan). BFD's advanced, integrated Groove Librarian allows you to drag and drop the included grooves or import your own MIDI grooves. You can then trigger them in realtime from a keyboard or let the BFD freestyle with the auto-shuffle and auto-fill features.

Humanize for less machine gun effect
BFD's humanization functions inject that elusive 'soul' into your drum parts. The integrated swing controls make it easy to tighten or relax the vibe as much as required. On top of this, the sound of the Groove can be further humanized through the controlled randomization of velocity and timing.

Great for any style of music
BFD is perfectly suited to rock, jazz, funk, country, hip-hop, blues, drum & bass. In fact, anything that may require a real drumkit, from auto-accompaniment, traditional song-writing and recording, to newer techniques such as creating original drum breaks.

Works with virtually any software
All this and more is provided in an intuitive, highly integrated interface, plugged into the heart of your favorite sequencing environment, via the VSTi, DXi, RTAS, AudioUnit and ReWire interfaces. A standalone version is also supplied, which uses the ASIO and CoreAudio protocols. BFD supports Windows and MacOS-X operating systems.

BFD was designed to make it easy to use for people who prefer to write music rather than mess with the inner workings of a plugin, while still allowing a great deal of control and flexibility for the rest of us tweak-heads.

FXpansion BFD Features:

  • Flexible mixing of multiple microphone placements.
  • Complete control of 7 real drum kits plus additional hats, snares and cymbals.
  • Hyper-detailed kits: up to 46 velocity layers and a wide selection of hit types, all recorded simultaneously through eleven microphones positioned around the kit and room.
  • Mix your drums by blending the mic sources just like in a real studio.
  • Easy compilation of new kits without wrestling with time-consuming
  • Editing and combination of sampler programs, or having to load multiple whole kits.
  • A versatile automated drummer in the Groove Librarian.
  • Endlessly variable sound and feel.

You can't tell this isn't a real drummer!

by Vince from Des Moines, IA, USA

If you are looking for realistic drum sounds which don't sound like samples, along with first rate recording of such sounds with the ability to tweak the mic placement, room sound, and more, look no f... read more [+]urther. This program provides enough velocity levels to make your programmed drum performance especially realistic, and along with a variety of "alternate" hits, you can make it almost impossible to tell that you didn't have a live drummer. You can infinitely vary the levels of the various mics, so you can have a dry closeup sound, or add the room mics and overheads to give you a more spacious sound. Don't like the sound of the snare? Change it with two clicks. I use in conjunction with M-audio trigger finger to tap out my drums. Works great and the availablility of additional excellent add on drum sets make this a complete winner. close [-]

Great sound - great flexibility

There is a very wide choice of kit pieces, hit types, and velocity levels. The recordings are clean and dry. You can mix direct mics, room mics, and piezo mics for a sound as close and tight or as w... read more [+]ide as you want. You can run each kit piece into its own DAW channel to tweak eq and effects as you please. Or you can just put the stereo output into a single channel.
There are many groove and fill choices available. To make them sound more real you can tweak the accuracy of the timing and velocity by increasing or decreasing the randomness. You can make the groove sound like somebody just learning to play all the way to a pure robot. You can also combine two different grooves, using different kit pieces from each kit. The possibilities just go on-and-on.
I record the kits using a Korg PadKontrol (I'm not a drummer). When I have a drummer available I use my Roland V-Drums kit to trigger the BFD samples (I think they sound much better than Roland's TD-6 sounds). In fact, they sound so good, the guy I have drumming (who is very good) asked me who did the drums, they sounded that good.
In short, these are great-sounding and have great flexibility. Recording drums is a difficult task, but with these triggered by a real drummer you've got the potential to have a great recording. close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Nate Edwards
Did you ever make a song on your computer using sampled drums, only to have somebody ask you "Man, who's the drummer on that track? Because he's good!" If you're using BFD, it happens! This is the absolute most realistic acoustic drum set that a computer can be armed with, and with the ability to buy gigabytes of expansion kits ranging from decades-old classic drums to hi-tech electronic sounds, it can't fail.
Austin Moss
This is a drum sound library that you will never regret purchasing. After using it in a session, I can't recommend it enough!

No more cheesy drum machines. This is one of the easiest packages to use. I'd have to say that BFD is the most incredible software I have ever used. close [-]

Our Customers Say...

My Sales Engineer is the best. If I need it tomorrow, I have it tomorrow. He makes sure everything is in order and that I'm set up right. I've spent a lot of money at other places, too, but I don't remember them calling me to make sure everything's okay.
