The best word to describe this amp is TONE. The 12AX7 tube preamp and solid state power amp do a great job producing the SVT sound. Upon hearing the BA300 at rehearsal the first time, our lead guitari... read more [+]st said several times, “I can’t believe the tone coming out of that thing”.February 20, 2009 Music Background: 30+ years as gigging weekend warrior I researched many combo amps within the 250 to 400 watt range (SWR, GK, Fender, Eden, Ampeg, and Ashdown) before purchasing the BA300. My criteria were specific and it whittled the list of possible contenders down considerably. The amp must have: 1. A tube preamp for warmth 2. 10-inch speakers for punch and clarity 3. No less than 300 watts 4. Minimum 3-band EQ 5. A variable compressor for attack balance 6. A DI for larger venues (PA) 7. Weight less than 75 pounds 8. A price less than $1000 With the BA300’s Ultra-Hi and Ultra-Lo switches, Bass, Mid, Low, Horn Level controls and Style selector, I can dial-up almost any sound (tone) I desire. However, I strive to achieve a clear, warm, tight sound with some punch. I play a Fender Precision American Standard (passive) bass with flatwound strings and medium string height. With my Precision’s treble control about 8, and the BA300’s preamp volume slightly past mid-point, bass at -3 db, the mid at -15 db, and the treble at +3 db, the sound is amazing. My need for simplicity is another reason why I chose the BA300. Its simple controls are noteworthy -- I just plug in, adjust the EQ and volume, as needed, and play. I typically don’t use the Ultra-Hi or Ultra-Lo settings and I leave the Style Selector flat and the Horn Level at mid-point but they’re there for tweaking as the room dictates. The only issue I have with this amp is it is not loud -- I have to mike the cab in order to be heard or use the DI. I like the color the speakers/cabinet adds to my sound so if I keep the BA300’s master volume at mid-point and use a good dynamic microphone about 3-4 inches from the speaker grille, between the high frequency horn and a 10” driver, the tone is perfect for my style and it sits in the mix extremely well. Overall, I am very pleased with the BA300-210. I’ve subsequently read in several forums about the suspect quality of the new Ampeg combos. Knowing this, I guess I took a gamble. But in my case, the gamble has paid off -- I really love the sound of this amp and its ease of use. close [-] Sweetwater Advice
Nick ChurchEvery bass player deserves to have the benefit of this level of classic Ampeg sound from their rig. Vintage tube section and EQ paired with the 300-watt solid state power stage and a solid 2 x 10" + horn cabinet make this a killer combo! Disappointed

I hate to put in a bad review on this amp because I love the tone, the look, and the features. The problem is quality. The first one I received didn't work at all which worried me but the replacemen... read more [+]t did work. The first problem I noticed was a horrible rattling sound that competes with my playing - I can hear it at gigs over my notes. At low volumes it doesn't happen. At first I thought this was either 'normal' or due to something I was doing wrong but I've read reviews on other sites that indicate this is common and due to poor construction/design. At my most recent gig it suddenly stopped producing sound - if I turned it off and back on the sound would fade in slowly at a lower volume but eventually cut out again, sometimes right away and sometimes several songs later. I haven't had it repaired yet so I don't know what has happened but I've only had this amp about a year and wouldn't expect this from an Ampeg. I've always loved the tone I hear others getting from their Ampegs, and that's why I wanted one. If this product was made well (no rattling or quality/reliability issues) it would be 5 stars hands down. The only reason I gave it the additional half star is for the incredible tone - but what good is that if the rattling drowns it out and you can't rely on it? *sigh* close [-]

This combo is overpriced and poorly constructed. The cabinet rattles and buzzes due to it's poor quality. This is my third Chinese Ampeg and I finally gave up on Ampeg and went with a Mesa M3 Carbine combo. Wow - what a difference in quality! This is what Ampegs used to be like. close [-]
