The A-to-D Conversion Quality You Need!

The Burl Audio Audio B2 Bomber ADC analog-to-digital converter may just be the most important piece of gear in your studio. No matter how good your microphones, compressors, or other pieces of your input signal path may be, if your converters don't hold up, your tracks won't sound their best. An excellent clock isn't enough. That's why Burl built their B2 Bomber ADC with a top-quality analog signal path to match its digital converter. At Sweetwater, we've heard a lot of A-to-D converters - find out for yourself why we consider the Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC one of the best!

Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC Analog-to-digital Converter at a Glance:
  • An A-to-D that's more than just a converter
  • The finishing touch to your analog signal path
  • The simplest front-panel interface on the market
An A-to-D that's more than just a converter

The Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC isn't your typical run-of-the-mill analog-to-digital converter. The reason for this is simple. Most A-to-D converters use top-shelf clocking circuits, isolated power rails, and other key conversion components. By contrast, their analog signal paths are merely adequate. That's where the Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC goes leaps and bounds beyond typical A-to-D converters. Not only does it provide you with unrivaled A-to-D conversion, but its analog signal path is on par with the best all-analog audio gear out there - no 10-cent capacitors or 25-cent op-amps here! Better-sounding audio before conversion means better sounding tracks. Don't settle for less.

The finishing touch to your analog signal path

For most engineers, it's hard to think of your A-to-D converter as the last step in your analog signal path. Fortunately, that's exactly the approach Burl Audio took when they designed their B2 Bomber ADC. That's why they gave the B2 Bomber ADC their revolutionary BURL AUDIO BX1 hybrid circuit/proprietary transformer combination. Using a discrete Class A, zero-feedback, zero-capacitor signal path, the B2 Bomber ADC responds to incoming audio like tape. The hotter you hit it, the more natural saturation you get. Coupled with Burl's top-of-the-line clock, the B2 Bomber ADC gives you unrivaled conversion with unheard-of headroom.

The simplest front-panel interface on the market

From the layout of the B2 Bomber ADC's front panel, it's easy to see that Burl Audio doesn't believe in senseless overengineering. Whereas many A-to-D converters sport fancy digital displays with controls that make them about as pleasant to setup as a digital wrist watch, the B2 Bomber ADC features a streamlined set of simple dials. Changing the B2 Bomber ADC's settings from an internal clock set to 48kHz with -12dB of input attenuation to an external clock at 192kHz with -20dB attenuation takes less time than it just took you to read this sentence. How cool is that!? What's more, you get a bright, easy-to-read 30-segment LED meter, so you know exactly how hot you're running your input signal.

Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC Analog-to-digital Converter Features:
  • Professional 2-channel analog-to-digital conversion with a unique high-quality analog input signal path provides the missing link between your analog input path and your DAW
  • Proprietary, high-definition, BURL Audio BX1 transformer input reacts to incoming signal like tape
  • Discrete Class A transistor-based signal path with zero feedback and no capacitors ensure absolute audio fidelity
  • Simple front-panel knob-based controls make dialing in settings easy
  • 6-position audiophile-quality attenuator lets you select from common headroom settings
  • Impressive 120dB of dynamic range gives you plenty of headroom
  • 30-segment RMS-based LED meter provides bright, easy-to-read input-level feedback for both channels
  • Select from 6 sample rate settings, including 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, and 192kHz
  • BNC word clock input with two outputs of extremely low jitter clock
  • 2x AES outputs and 1 x (2-channel) SPDIF output with dual-wire AES support
  • Proudly made in the USA
The Burl Audio B2 Bomber ADC analog-to-digital takes quality A-to-D conversion to the next level!

The Missing Piece!

Disclaimer : This is a very premature review, but I am so impressed, I couldn't help myself!

Put the unit through it's paces on tracking today with a singer/songwriter, and it's so true, this unit sounds like hitting tape...and not like you can barely hear the effect either, if you drive the input with whatever is before it in the chain, then attenuate at -22, you get some excellent pleasantly saturated tape sounds. Think vocals on Zach Bryans self titled EP. Actually Dave Cobb produced the American Heartbreak LP (where I assume ZB learned his chops for his self-produced EP), both him and Vance Powell swear by Burl stuff, now see why!

I've really been struggling to get that sound...none of the tape plugs (I have all the major players) quite do it in that perfectly rounded off analog way...always find the highs never quite where I want them. This makes my job sooo much easier!

I was concerned that seeing how long it's been around, it may not be that big of a difference from what you can currently do in the box...and on GS I read some posts where some were saying it's really not that obvious what it's doing...I completely disagree, it can be quite obvious and it's just so musical and euphonic in it's sound. Sure it's not like cranking the input on a tape plug to the 10's, but it is obvious...like it just sounds like a record when tracking.

These days I have a relatively modest hardware chain (all hard patched) and do everything else in the box...I love hardware, and think it's still very relevant...but they've gotta be pieces that really do a great job, and make my life easier by helping me produce and mix faster...the B2 Bomber ADC is one of those pieces!

I have run a couple old mixes through it and it sounds phenomenal, beautiful sound stage and separation...of course I don't hit it as hard on a full mix. I have yet to do a full production and mix through it, but am really looking forward to it...I can tell just from this limited experience that this is one of those pieces that won't leave my rack anytime soon, if ever! Some day may consider the Bomber DA and the Vancouver, but for now I feel like the ADC gets me right where I need to be!

Amazing Sound

I remaster reel to reel tapes. This device is incredible and I highly recommend it.

Stunning Converter

I have history of working with many different audio converters. This converter however really has some magical properties. Because of its signal path and virtually no noise, you are able to drive this converter in a way that other converters use emulation for. The Burl transformers inside condition the audio in a very pleasing rich way. If a sound is overloaded or clipped, it is as if you are overloading a transformer instead and getting a tape effect. Other converters will use variations of soft clip protections but the Burls analog style of doing this yields a high level of control of how you wish the sound to be. Properly gain staged it provides a very pleasing open sound. Want a pushed creamy tape sound, drive this converter to clipping. Converter gain can be changed with the input level, effecting how the signal reacts to the converter.

One of the most well-kept secrets of this converter, is actually using it as the master clock of your system. The larger-than-life burl sound can be attributed to its extremely low jitter clock, which can easily beat clocks that dedicate themselves as a sole purpose device. Therefore, by clocking your system to a Burl, you are removing the jitter in all of the devices, carrying a clear, deep, 3d sound into your system. I found this out by mistake by accidently making it the master clock of my system. Thanks to my Rep Brian Hughes from helping me troubleshoot this.

The converter creates a highly musical AD that can carry the quality of your production forward. Upon mastering stages, the converter can be clipped for even more loudness. However, for critical mastering applications, a more transparent converter maybe considered, and these decisions would be taken by a professional mastering house with proper rooms and monitoring.

Overall, this is the evolution of the UA2192, and it continues to leave a mark.

Elegant conversion

A lot of converters nowadays have caught up to being quite good compared to converters of the past. Especially for home studios. I work for one of the largest media companies in the world and my engineering director always gives throw away comments about how most converters nowadays are basically the same (maybe to justify budgets). Burl proves that there is a higher standard (and him wrong). Most converters jitters tend to make mid high frequency's seem harsher than they should be and low frequencies just a tad loose. After picking this up and using it to also clock my very consistent Antelope interface I noticed both tracking vocals and guitars felt smoother and needed less eq to make them clear and present. Basically I wasn't fixing the slight imperfections that seemed to plague my recordings. It's most noticeable it thx 3k and about 400 hz region but that may just be the material I'm working on.
The conversion is simply elegant and it feels smooth to listen to. Granted it's only recording what you put it, but I find myself having to do less work (and more importantly making less wrong eq choices) and it plays better out of the monitors. Again clocking through WC seemed to help me as well. I went back to a few mixes and did minor adjustments that really helped with mixes when I referenced them in real world environments. There's a thousand things that will affect your signal. Each part affecting certain frequencies in some way. The way your room responds, the curve of your speakers, the preamp and microphone you choose. But conversion rarely is an aesthetic creative choice. Most people don't want converters that boost a bass response or what have you. The Burl converters take away that seeming undefined issue that most small studios have. I only use it as a 2 track converter for important parts but next large studio I build will likely be all Burl across the channels.
These beat MTRX, Apogee, Focusrite, and obv RME, Antelope etc. I have not tried Lynx in years or Prism sound but I imagine these are just as competitive if not more.
If you can't afford a whole studio with these it might be worth it to get the bomber to handle single and double tracking and patch your preamps into it. It really does make that much of a difference.
Any engineer with just a few years experience will notice the improvement. And peace of mind. Thanks Burl.

Jaw dropping

If you are ready to take the last step, this is it. Warning: Once you hear what this does to your digital recordings you will never be the same and neither will your sound.

The best analogy I have seen is the other reviewer that calls this unit the "Green Tape Machine". It has solved the problem of taking digital recordings and making them sound analog.

There's a compression and glue happening here that you really have to hear to understand. Reverbs and delays sound better. Your mics reach their fullest potential. The soundstage is huge and doesn't blur together like it used to.

Absolutely love it on the mix bus. You can dial in your desired transformer saturation based on the program material. Keep the transients or blur them a bit. At home from delicate acoustic recordings to the dirtiest rock record.

Love tracking with it too. Vocals never sat in the mix so well. If I could give it more stars I would. Probably may favorite and most important piece of outboard gear I have ever owned. You won't believe it.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Joe Holsclaw

I never quite knew how much body and depth my recordings could have until I tracked through the Burl B2 Bomber ADC. This is the definitive converter for anyone who's pro or project studio is cursed with digital sterility.
