The fact of the matter is, closed-back headphones will never compare with the hi-fi sound of boutique, high-end open back headphones. That being said, in a studio environment, particularly a home stu... read more [+]dio environment, good closed back studio headphones are absolutely essential not just for tracking, but for engineering as well. The ATH-M50's are a perfect blend of comfort, sound isolation, and great sound quality. Wear them while trying to find the right mic placement on an amplifier as the guitarist blares away. It'll dampen the sound from the room enough that you can hear exactly what's coming through the mic. Also, when used for tracking there's almost no bleed, allowing you to give the artist (or yourself) plenty of volume. The headphones are very comfortable so long tracking sessions won't result in a throbbing head. Finally, the frequency response is better than most headphones. The bass is solid but not overwhelming compared to some closed-back designs. Also, the high end is not as hyped as some. The midrange is much better than competing brands at this price range, in my humble opinion, as well. Overall, it's a great headphone for tracking, monitoring, and engineering . . . and is even good enough for home studios to supplement near-field monitors for mixing. close [-]
