  • The options you want, the performance you demand
  • Mid-Side recording capability - from one mic
  • Step up to 40 series quality
The options you want, the performance you demand

You'll love the results you get from the AT4050ST! This innovative stereo condenser gives you the choice of selecting a left-right stereo output or choosing discrete Mid-Side signals for later manipulation. The microphone's dual-diaphragm capsules maintain precise polar pattern definition across the full frequency range. Its transformerless circuitry virtually eliminates low-frequency distortion.

Mid-Side recording capability - from one mic

Because the AT4050ST is equipped with both cardioid and figure-8 elements, it allows you to take advantage of Mid-Side recording techniques; in essence, you can change the "width" of your stereo image to suit a particular project - even after you've recorded! Audio-Technica built the AT4050 to give you a very flexible way to record in stereo, so you can record sources with confidence.

Step up to 40 series quality

Audio-Technica's 40 series microphones let you capture great sound, and they let you do it the way you want. Designed from the ground up for premium performance, these 40 series mics are also built to keep on performing over the long haul - any of the great mics in this series makes a perfect addition to your mic locker! Best of all, these 40 series mics provide top-shelf A-T quality that's suitable for elite studio facilities - at prices that put them well within your reach!

Best stereo mic out there!

I do a lot of live acoustic recording, chamber music and small orchestras. For years, I've relied on the Shure VP88 as my main stereo mic, but this season I needed to send it out for servicing. I had been eyeing the AT 4050ST for a little while, but since I had a great sounding stereo mic already, never bothered to try it. I bought one for a series of chamber music concerts, and I am never going back to the VP88 for this purpose! The mic is VERY well balanced across the spectrum, but my favorite thing about it is how quiet it is. I find this is common among AudioTechnica mics, all of the models I have are very low self-noise, but the 4050ST is incredibly quiet! There were times before the crowds came in where I couldn't even see the meters moving and thought there was an issue! The stereo separation is excellent in the "narrow" 90 degree setting, though I have not tried the "wide" or M/S settings yet. The shock mount made me a little worried at first, as it works solely by friction, but it holds the mic extremely well, and you can be confident positioning the mic upside down if you need to. I have an album project coming up this summer and look forward to using the 4050ST on drums, as well as acoustic guitar and piano. I have many AudioTechnica mics (AT8035, AT4051b, AT4049b, BP4029, Pro44), but this is my first medium sized diaphragm mic from them. I am so impressed I am now looking at a pair of AT4047 multi-pattern mics for my locker. If you do any kind of stereo recording, you will NOT be disappointed with this mic!

Fantastic Mid Side mic. Incredibly clear sound.

I bought one of these bad boys for field recording, not quite knowing what to expect. Reviews are rare, audio samples are almost non-existent, so I decided to get it simply after reading the specs and a couple of reviews.

Wow. It's incredibly clear. The stereo imaging is fantastic. Both the 90 and 127 degree internal matrix settings are crisp and clear, and you can hear a significant difference in the space between the two.

In Mid Side mode, it's even better, since you can fine tune how wide you want the image.

It's a simple mic, only a pad and the 3 mode switch. Sure, it won't do Blumelein or some other methods, but if you just want a really nice stereo or mid side option, I'm not sure I have heard much better.

I also use the BP4025, which I also love, but this mic might be a bit more defined, which is saying a lot, because the BP4025 is an exceptional microphone.

The build is tough, durable. A bit heavy but not too bad. It has taken my field recordings up a few levels. The sound is so realistic, I was listening to playback on headphones and I thought it was actually in the room.

Yeah it's pricey, but if you can afford it, you won't regret this mic.
