From Our Research Team:Eight Channels of Audient Quality with ADAT!The Audient ASP008 is a compact, 1U rack mount unit featuring eight high-quality mic preamplifiers developed from the microphone preamp design used in the acclaimed ASP8024 recording console. Implementing an 8-transistor discrete Class A front end with extended band-width and a noise floor close to the theoretical Johnson limit, the ASP008 offers amazingly transparent sound. Each preamp also features switchable input impedance, allowing you to explore the subtle variations in microphone character that are determined by output termination. For connection to a DAW or other ADAT-equipped gear, the ASP008 is loaded with ADAT outputs.Audient ASP008 ADAT Features:

It's a little early to be posting a review, as I'm still learning the subtle nuances of the preamp, but definitely wanted to share a few initial observations.June 22, 2012 Music Background: Professional Full time Recording Engineer/Producer First off, the feature set... read more [+] is ridiculous at this price. 8 high quality, Class A preamp channels in a single rack space - Channels 1 and 2 have front panel DI/inst inputs with 20db pads, switchable phantom, hi pass, and polarity on every channel, plus a line input (through dsub) option on every channel. Add in switchable impedance and note that the hi pass filter is sweepable from 25hz to 250 and its a great deal. but wait - there is more... each channel has a signal and peak indicator, and the included A/D converters integrate seamlessly with your DAW, and they sound good. I've ran vocals, electric guitar and saxophone through the preamps so far and my initial observation is that the headroom is good, the pre's are quiet, and they are clean but not sterile. I'm used to running through Neve style preamps most of the time and they are definitely smaller and thinner sounding, but not in a bad way - just in a more accurate and less colored way. there was plenty of gain to run my ribbon mic, and the switchable impedence is cool - i noticed that in the 5k setting, the transients come through ridiculously good. For a sibilant vocal, might want to try a lower setting. With all that, I'd have given it a 5 but there are a couple of things to be aware of. 1 - there is a lot crammed into a single rackspace. if you have fat fingers you may find this not the most efficient preamp. Its really laid out very well, but it is packed in pretty tight 2 - in order to combat the massive heat created by 8 Class A amps, there is an "ultra quiet" fan in the unit. This fan is NOT quiet at all - I find it noticeably louder than my Mac Pro with 5 hard drives. Seriously, for the project and mid sized studios that would likely be the target market for this, just a word of caution that the fan is loud enough to potentially prohibit some recording in the control room. I wouldn't do acoustic instruments or vocals in the control room with this. Electric guitars, DI, etc would be fine, but with a sensitive mic on an intimate part, the fan will need to be addressed if you want to use it in the control room. 3 - which leads me to the final "quirk"... there is no power switch on this, you just plug it in and its on and unplug to turn off. normally i'm fine with that, but being as it creates a fair amount of noise, i want to be able to easily shut it off. right now, I just have to unplug it and then plug it back in, which is a bit cumbersome. The easy solution to this is to put it on a separate power conditioner from items that you leave running constantly, so that you can switch it off easily when needed. Again, overall very impressed so far - rich on features, feels and looks well built, puts on a nice light display when in full use, and most importantly sounds good - a nice clean sound that is not cold or sterile. its a great value at this price as well - 2 of these would make a pretty awesome front end for a small studio that does a lot of tracking of bands. close [-] Sweetwater Advice
Simon PicazoI recently used this live on a jazz gig in Kansas City. Amazing flexibility, great DIs, variable impedance on every channel, 60dB of clean gain, and ADAT connectivity. Ridiculously high quality!
Derek SenestraroThe Audient ASP008 ADAT has great pres and for the money is an incredible value. I used it recently to record some drum tracks and was blown away with the quality at this price point. It's an upgrade to your entire system with just one piece.
