A Feature-packed FireWire Interface!

The MOTU 828mk3 is a FireWire interface, providing 28 inputs and 30 outputs, including 10 channels of analog recording and playback, combined with 16 channels of ADAT digital I/O, stereo S/PDIF and TOSLink I/O, and on-board SMPTE synchronization. The 828mk3's two mic/line/instrument inputs have preamplified sends that allow you to insert your favorite outboard effects before the signal goes digital. The real show-stopper here is the built-in digital mixing and effects with reverb, two compressors (including a modeled LA-2A), and British-style EQ on-board the 828mk3.

  • Effects
  • Overload protection
  • Digitally controlled analog input trim
  • CueMix FX software
  • Synchronization
  • Expansion, Drivers and AudioDesk

I/O
The 828mk3 provides 28 inputs and 30 outputs in a single rack-space form factor. All I/O is routed to an on-board 16-bus digital mixer driven by hardware-based DSP with 32-bit floating point precision. The mixer allows users to apply no-latency effects processing to inputs, outputs or busses directly in the 828mk3 hardware, independent of the computer. Effects can even be applied when the 828mk3 is operating stand-alone (without a computer) as a complete rack-mounted mixer. Input signals to the computer can be recorded wet, dry, or dry with a wet monitor mix (for musicians during recording, for example).

Eight balanced (TRS) 24-bit analog inputs and outputs, as well as two XLR main outs and the two preamp inputs, can operate at sample rates up to 192 kHz (a total of ten analog inputs and outputs). Two optical banks provide 16 channels of ADAT optical at 48 kHz, 8 channels of S/ MUX optical I/O at 96 kHz or two banks of stereo TOSLink at rates up to 96 kHz. The banks operate independently, allowing users to mix and match any optical formats. RCA S/PDIF connectors also supply independent stereo digital I/O. Each mic input has a corresponding rear panel send that allows users to insert outboard gear before the signal goes digital. Any input can be used as a return.

Effects
Effects include reverb, parametric EQ and compression/limiting. The 828mk3's Classic Reverb provides five different room types, three frequency shelves with adjustable crossover points, shelf filtering and reverb lengths up to 60-seconds. Two forms of compression are supplied: a standard compressor with conventional threshold/ratio/ attack/release/gain controls and the Leveler, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A optical compressor, which provides vintage, musical automatic gain control. Finally, the EQ section provides 7- band parametric EQ modeled after British analog console EQ's, featuring 4 filter styles (gain/Q profiles) to effectively cover a wide range of audio material. LP and HP filters are also supplied with slopes that range from 6 to 36dB.

The 828mk3's flexible effects architecture allows users to apply EQ and compression on every input and output (a total of 58 channels), with enough DSP resources for at least one band of parametric EQ and compression on every channel at 48 kHz. However, DSP resources are allocated dynamically and a DSP meter allows users to keep tabs on the 828mk3's processing resources. Each input, output and mix bus provides a send to the Classic Reverb processor, which then feeds reverb returns to mix buses and outputs, with a selectable split point between them to prevent send/return feedback loops.

Overload protection
Individual 48V phantom power and 20 dB pad switches are supplied for each of two front-panel mic/guitar combo jacks, which are both equipped with preamps. Both inputs also now include a switch that toggles between the low-impedance XLR mic input and the true (high- impedance) quarter-inch guitar input jack. Both mic/guitar inputs are equipped with V-Limit, a hardware limiter that helps prevent digital clipping from overloaded input signals. With V-Limit enabled, signals can go above zero dB (where limiting kicks in) to as high as +12 dB above zero with no distortion due to digital clipping. Additional protection can be applied to the mic/guitar inputs by enabling the 828mk3's Soft Clip feature, which engages just before clipping occurs and helps reduce perceptible distortion.

Digitally controlled analog input trim
All of the 828mk3's analog inputs are equipped with digitally controlled analog trim controls that allow adjustments in precise 1 dB increments. The mic/guitar input trims can be adjusted using front- panel digital rotary encoders that provide feedback in the front panel LCD. All analog inputs, including eight TRS analog inputs, can be trimmed using the CueMix FX control software for Mac and Windows. This allows users to fine-tune their trim settings for synths, effects modules and a wide variety of analog inputs for optimum levels. Different trim configurations can then be saved as files on disk for instant recall.

CueMix FX software
All of the settings in the 828mk3 are accessible from the programmable front-panel backlit LCD. Users can also launch the CueMix FX control software for Mac OS X, Windows XP and Windows Vista. CueMix FX is a completely new software front-end with attractive graphic mixing, graphic editing of parametric EQ and a convenient tabbed interface for quick access to all features in one window. Three separate tabs show inputs, mix busses (eight stereo busses) and outputs. Users click a "Focus" button on any channel or bus to edit its settings in another area on the right-hand side, which provides separate tabs for graphic editing of parametric EQ, compression and other effects. Each channel displays a graphic thumbnail of EQ curves, compressor settings and other channel specific parameters. There is also a section for talkback and listenback. CueMix FX can be operated side by side with any host audio software for Mac or Windows, and it can be controlled from the Mackie Control Universal Pro automated worksurface.

Synchronization
The 828mk3 is equipped with Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS), a DSP-driven phase lock engine and internal clock source that produces imperceptibly low jitter characteristics (below the noise floor), even when the 828mk3 is resolved to an external clock source via either word clock or SMPTE time code. The 828mk3 can directly resolve to (or generate) time code via a dedicated quarter-inch time code input and output, without the need for an extra synchronizer.

Expansion, Drivers and AudioDesk
As with other MOTU FireWire interfaces, the 828mk3 supplies two FireWire jacks so it can be daisy-chained with additional MOTU FireWire audio interfaces or other devices. The 828mk3 is also fully compatible with the 8pre, a single rack MOTU interface that adds 8 mic preamp inputs to the 828mk3. Because the 8pre connects to the 828mk3 via ADAT optical, its mic inputs are fully integrated into the 828mk3's on-board CueMix FX digital mixer.

The 828mk3 provides CueMix FX and drivers for Mac (OS X) and Windows (XP and Vista) for cross-platform compatibility with virtually all audio software via WDM/ASIO/Core Audio drivers. The included AudioDesk workstation software for Mac provides 24-bit recording/editing and 32-bit mixing/processing/mastering.

Sweetwater Advice

MOTU interfaces have been one of the industry standards for Apple computer users for years. So much so that PC users are also using them. The 828 has been a favorite of composers, producers, and hobbyists alike because of the attention to quality and expandabiltiy. The new 828mk3 has built-in effects and more I/O capabilities than ever, but still maintains the same look and feel 828mk2 users are used to. The 828mk3 is the perfect interface to expand upon; you can add on a MOTU 8pre via ADAT lightpipe and record entire bands in your home studio. My roommates and I have this exact setup and let me tell you, quality and stability have never been an issue.

I was using a mk2 for a while and needed more i/o, seeing the mk3 had 16 channels of ADAT instead of 8 i decided to upgrade. Add a nice synth to the spdif inputs and midi and you have an amazing recording setup.

This blows away the 003 rack, and would put the RME 800 in hot water. If you are searching for an all in one firewire interface this is it! close [-]

The MOTU 828mk3 is a work of art. Great, value for money, great audio quality.

I previously used the mk2 and also Presonus products. But the the mk3 is a great upgrade.

Plus with the 24 bit, 192khz sample rate make my new sample recordings extremely clear.

Also with the help of the DSP CueMix FX built in to the 828 make the purchase even better, because it can take the processing power of the plugins off of your computer.

Worth every penny. A must buy for anyone serious to add a good interface without breaking the bank. close [-]

Flexible firewire multi I/O with powerful DSP mixing, EQ, reverb, and compression built in.

I've used MOTU's original 896 firewire interface extensively, and I've developed a great deal of respect for the quality and performance of their products. The 828mk3 is the latest model in the well-k... read more [+]nown 828 series. I am simply amazed.

The 828 gives you 8 1/4" TRS inputs, 8 1/4" TRS outputs, plus XLR main outs, XLR combo inputs on the front panel with preamps, optical inputs and optical outputs (16 channels each), SPDIF, TRS sends, front panel stereo headphone and main out TRS jacks, MIDI, timecode, and word clock. Everything works in parallel, and feeds to and from your computer over a single firewire cable. All TRS and XLR connections are balanced, and the TRS are all line level and also unbalanced compatible.

The preamps on the front panel sound clean, quiet, and crystal clear. Absolutely transparent. Trim knobs give you about 58 dB on gain on the preamps. 20 dB pad and phantom power switches as well. With the preamps set to no gain, and the pad on, its about line level, so you have plenty of gain for even the quietest mics.

Everything can be adjusted from backlit LCD screen on the front panel, and the headphone jack can be set to monitor any output. There is also a convenient talkback/listenback feature you can use to communicate with people in your studio over any other I/O.

The real power of this device is in the on-board DSP mixer and FX processor, CueMix DSP. Basically, it lets you apply the following FX to any input and/or output:

* Compressor/Limiter
* Vintage Leveler (very nice!)
* 7-band parametric EQ
* Global reverb

Note that *each* input and *each* output can have its *own* custom EQ, leveler, compressor, etc. Amazing. The reverb is global with sends and returns.

This wraps a 28x16 matrix mixer (8 stereo busses). As I mentioned, everything is controllable from the front panel, but the coolest thing of all is the CueMix software, which lets you control the whole thing from your computer (Windows or Mac). You can save 16 presets in the unit for recall later, with or without a computer attached.

With so many inputs and outputs you would wonder what to do with them all. As I integrated this device into a live sound system, I realized that I could plug lots of things directly into this box, and eliminate a lot of other gear. I replaced a mixer, two compressor limiters, and an EQ, and cut my wiring in half. In the end, it wasn't that hard to fill up the I/O. :) In a studio setting it would be a dream as well, being able to create a custom mix for anyone in the studio on the fly. And its all 32-bit digital processing inside, so you cut down on noise as well.

Historically, MOTU's firewire interfaces have been known for their quality in recording and playback, with clean, quiet preamps and top-notch 24-bit A/D and D/A converters. This unit supports sampling rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. The quality as a analog-to-digital recording interface is second to none, but the addition of the on-board DSP steals the show.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this box to anyone looking for a new recording interface. It also works wonders when you need a programmable mixer, limters, eq, etc. without a physical control surface. The drivers are solid and the software looks and feels very polished. You can add more devices via firewire. Considering all the gear you could replace / not have to buy, the $750 price tag is well worth it.

All in all, no real complaints. If you need more XLR inputs with preamps, take a look and the new 896mk3, it has the same on-board DSP. That will be my next buy from MOTU. close [-]

I hated it, then I loved it

OK...the first day with my new 828mk3 I wanted to return it. The CD that came with it was unreadable, and I couldn't get through to Tech Support...I'm always leery of a very busy Tech Support...indica... read more [+]tes non-user-friendly product LOL !! Anyway, Sweetwater was very helpful and I set up a MOTU account and downloaded everything I needed.
I want to use this thing LIVE...I had some trouble getting my nice Lexicon reverb integrated, but I called Tech Support (harumph) and they calmly advised me to make sure that whatever input I was using to connect to my Lexicon output WAS NOT MUTED...DUHHHH...problem solved (no, it doesn't say so in the manual, which I read from front to back...twice).
The thing that did it for me was the sound. This unit has superb audio, and I'm really picky and I go through a LOT of equipment. I perform live...a jazz duo consisting of my wife on vocals and me on guitars and keyboards. Acoustic guitar sounds beautiful, my Strat sounds so good I can play it without any effects (I play clean), and all my synths come through nice and clean...sweet. I use Chainer to host my VST's and Chainer allows me to configure it to any of the 828mk3's outputs.

My biggest complaint is having to go to Radio Shack and spend over $40.00 for a Firewire cable. MOTU loves to show the 828mk3 attached to a laptop. Hello, most laptops have the 4-pin 1394 connector, so why ship just the big 6-pin with the unit???

Anyway, I loved it once I learned how to use it, and I think I'll keep it. close [-]
