Tremendous XDR2 Preamps If you want excellent, professional sound, you need great mic pres - that's why Mackie put a lot of heart into the design of the 802-VLZ3's XDR2 (Extended Dynamic Range) mic preamps. Delivering pure, clean, studio-grade sound, these pres have an impressively wide frequency range, especially in the low end, and even at extremely high gain settings. Switchable phantom power means you can use any of your favorite microphones with your 802-VLZ3 and expect incredible, high-quality sound. While it's true that the VLZ3 mixers have gained an excellent reputation for more than just their mic pres, we can't help but attribute some of that fame to the XDR2's superb design. Premium musical EQ section The 802-VLZ3 features an ultra-musical 3-band active EQ for tweaking and sculpting your signature sound. Mackie spent time optimizing the center frequencies of these EQs, and it shows on the 802-VLZ3: enjoy low shelving at 80Hz, mid-peaking at 2.5kHz, and high shelving at 12kHz to shape your sound in any direction. Plus, up to 15dB boost/cut per band gives you a lot of flexibility, and the useful 100Hz low cut/high pass switch on each mic input can save you from that dreaded low-frequency muddiness. Ultra-compact, yet ultra-versatile Weighing five and a half pounds with its power supply, the Mackie 802-VLZ3 is light enough to fit in your backpack, yet delivers a host of ins and outs to accommodate nearly any configuration! Two switchable Hi-Z instrument inputs on channels 1 and 2 mean you can plug your electric guitar or bass in directly, or, when disengaged, connect keyboards, CD, or MP3 players - anything line level. Plug a stereo microphone into the mic inputs, and record with amazing clarity onto your location recording device. You can even run the tape outputs into your laptop's stereo inputs and use the included Tracktion software to capture your sound for later tweaking and editing. You also get essential engineering features including separate control room volume and phones knobs. Another handy feature on Mackie's 802-VLZ3 is its clever "mute" function - signals from muted channels are secretly routed to the Alt 3-4 outputs and also into the Control Room section - ideal for creating submixes, previewing channels, or creating a "mix minus" for broadcast applications! Sleek, rugged design Professionals around the world choose Mackie mixers for their road-proven, time-tested design. These VLZ3 Mixers are the same Mackie workhorses we've come to expect, designed to take some serious abuse, yet keep on sounding their best. With Mackie's legendary solid-steel chassis that protects it from any tough knocks, your 802-VLZ3's control knobs even ride just above the surface of the chassis, transferring potential impact to the chassis - and not to the vital circuit board. Thick, horizontally mounted fiberglass PC boards add to the 802-VLZ3's brick-like construction, giving it a shock-absorbing support structure that's truly built to last. Mackie 802-VLZ3 Features:

October 27, 2011 Music Background: Great for submixing keys + front-end input to DAW
by jchop from Evans, GA
When I put together my first simple DAW, I went for an 8-input mixer with built-in DAW integration. The form factor was much too big, and it had features like onboard compression that I didn't really... read more [+] need. Then I went to a rackmount IO, but the mic pres were too noisy, the software drivers a bit wonky, and I lost a lot of the mixer hands-on control that I previously enjoyed.January 12, 2010 Music Background: Hobbyist Lesson learned: get the right components. So, new mission: stay within budget, but get a PCIe based I/O and the Mackie on the front end. With the Mackie, I get the right form factor (roughly same footprint as a sheet of paper), exceedingly low noise, better gain on the pres, suprisingly flexible routing (check the manual to see some suggested setups),and heavy, solid construction. Nothing feels cheap. Controls are smooth, knobs are rock solid, connections are tight. For a hobbyist setup with two workstation synths + a couple of mics, this is _perfect_ (and leaves room for more!). Quality/price ratio is nuts. close [-] solid clean sound!!
