Setting the Standard Since 1981

Originally designed to replicate the feel of a tortoiseshell pick, Dunlop’s Tortex line has since outgrown its iconic tortoise mascot, revolutionizing the world of guitar picks for over 40 years. Before Tortex picks came along, guitar players could only choose from a limited selection of plectrums that often came in only three ambiguous sizes: light, medium, and heavy. Jim Dunlop sought to provide a solution by arming players with a complete range of thickness standardized to the 100th of a millimeter, and easily recognizable by Dunlop’s signature color-coded system. Excellent durability, perfect grip, and snappy tone have made Tortex the industry-standard pick for guitar players around the world. Whether you’re a pro or just beginning your musical journey, you can be sure that there’s a Tortex pick for you!

Signature Tortex composition and durability

Jim Dunlop strove to provide guitar players with the best pick possible, constantly refining his materials and processes until he arrived at Tortex’s signature composition. Tortex picks are designed with a grip-enhancing surface that naturally feels “just right” — there's enough texture to firmly stay in your fingers without ever feeling sticky. Constructed from a highly durable plastic called Delrin, Tortex is resistant to the constant wear and bending that guitar picks are subjected to; in other words, they have a long shelf life even with heavy playing. And of course, Tortex picks are world renowned for delivering a clear and articulate sound that’s ideal for electric, acoustic, and bass guitar playing across the entire spectrum of musical genres.

Sharp point for precision picking

Dunlop's sharply pointed pick shape is a favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater, given it delivers far greater accuracy than a normal rounded pick tip. By reducing the pick's contact point with the string, Dunlop sharps offer a well-defined attack that's perfect for players who require exceptional clarity and precision, even when playing at lightning speed!

Dunlop Tortex Sharp Guitar Picks Features:

  • Sharp point for maximum speed, accuracy, and clarity while picking
  • Highly durable and resistant to everyday play wear
  • Tortex signature grip-enhancing surface
  • Bright and articulate tone that works equally well for electric, acoustic, and bass guitar

Best Picks for Metal

Jeff Loomis uses these picks, and after catching one of his at a show, decided to give it a try. I normally use 2mm gator grip picks, so the feel of the sharps was really challenging to get used to, but I was surprised by the distinct change in tone! The sharps have a much sharper attack, and after going back and forth between the picks, the gator grips just sounded too dull for the metal tones I go for. I'm finally used to the sharps, and now I can't go back to anything else. Because the tone comes from the small, sharp contact area of the point, you will wear it out faster than a thicker/broader pick, so accept that it's a consumable item if you want to maintain the tone.

Supreme Accuracy.

This pick is the perfect thickness and shape for perfect control and accuracy. Definitely one of my favorite picks to use.

Tortex Sharp 1,50 great metal picks

I've been a great fan of the Dunlop Jazz III XL Series. They sound terrific warm with a great range, and I still play them. A friend told me about the Dunlop USA Sharp Series 1,5. Plays nothing else sinds he discovered them. So I thought I'd give it a shot and bought a 12- pack.
I was blown away by the sound edgy, square, hard brutal attack, everything the Jazz III XL was not. You do have to get used to them. But nothing good ever comes easy for guitar players. As I mentioned I keep the JazzIII XL for warm smooth Rock solo's and the The Tortex Sharp for practice and In your face metal. Great Job Dunlop.

THE most accurate pick on the planet

There is a reason Jeff Loomis uses these. I can tell you that they will take a few weeks to fully get used to, but that time will pay off in spades. After using these for 5 months, a jazz 3, gravity picks, v-picks, ultex sharp... They all pale in comparison to the clean, articulate sound. Warning: these will not hide any of your picking or playing flaws at all, but will make you better over time because of that. I chose these primarily because I angle my pick heavily. Because of the pointy end, the pick doesn't muffle the attack like with broader picks. This is THE best pick out there.

New favorite!

I have played with Tortex sharps 1.35 exclusively for about a year now. I have always liked a thicker pick for electric guitar and with the shape of these plus the strength of a 1.50 pick you'll find that you can conserve energy while still getting plently of attack on the strings. They helped my accuarcy and stamina while not having to sacrifice my tone or playing style. Dunlop for life!
