Great unit
by Chip Burke from Columbus, OH, July 2007
Music Background: Play, produce, record, mix, you name it.
I was comparing this to a few of the other big name 4 channel pres out there and decided to give this a try based on the UA name and unique feature set this presented. I am very impressed with this unit. The ability to switch the transformer in and out is really a great feature. Without the transformer you do indeed get a super clean (and I mean clean clean clean... no noise even when pushed hard) no character signal. (Not a bad thing, just CLEAN.) With the transformer in the circuit you get that transformer presence like you would expect from a British console. Vocals are very up front and just mix well. When pushing the input you can get a bit of good grit to spruce up guitars and bass. Backed off you get a great transformer clean tone with excellent transient response (My drums are happy campers). For a work horse "do dern near anything well" pre as a center piece of your studio, this is hard to beat.
Worth every penny!

I record everything from classical to punk, so I looked a long time for the right pre. The tonal options of this things are amazing and it has seen almost no-stop use since I got it. Before you think of buying another mic, get one of these - you'll expand your tonal options astronomically!
Wish I had bought 8 channels
by Tom Z from Los Angeles, CA, October 2006
Music Background: Producer. musician
This pre-amp sounds amazing in every setting i've used it in. I had considered the 8 channel but thought I wouldn't want 8 channels of the same unit. I was wrong. The three input settings really change the sound. Ive used it for piano, vocals, drums and even as a Bass D.I. Every time I will have people calling me asking me what i used as a pre-amp/D.I. It's my "go to" mic pre.
