From Our Research Team:A Great Mic Pre and More!Just another mic preamp? Hardly. The 286A is such a versatile, multi-faceted device that your audio pros at Sweetwater are at a loss to know where to begin describing it. As a mic preamp, the 286A gives you a +48V phantom power switch, an 80Hz high pass filter and clear, pristine sound. But the 286A also works as a voice processor, with a compressor, de-esser, enhancer, and an expander/gate. Tough enough to handle the rock-n-roll howlers, but sophisticated enough to pick up the subtle details and nuances of live performance, the 286A gives you a huge range of tools in one box with one power supply. All you need for great-sounding, dependable voice processing is right here in the 286A!• Studio quality mic preamp combined with a compressor, de-esser, enhancer and expander/gate puts tremendous flexibility in an affordable, compact unit. • Ideal for studio, broadcast, and field recording as well as live sound. Use for tracking or mixing. • Pre-amp accepts mic or line level inputs, offers phantom power: and 80Hz, 18dB/Oct high pass filter plus input level meter. • All new design offers OverEasy compression ranging from smooth and transparent to dense and aggressive for the dbx "in your face" sound. • Feedforward de-esser removes excessive sibilance or other high frequency overloads ( like crash cymbals ) across a wide range of input levels. • High frequency Spectral Enhancement circuit continually analyzes the input signal and self-adjusts to provide just the right amount of equalization. • Low frequency Spectral Enhancement uses a special fourth-order bass equalizer that permits substantial boost around 80Hz while reducing the muddy mid-bass • Expander/gate's variable ratio lets you choose gentle downward expansion or hard gating action. • Master bypass switch for the processor section; clip indicators on both the pre amp and the processor output, floating balanced inputs. • An insert jack between the mic pre and processor sections is perfect for adding an equalizer ( like the 242 ) or muting the output of the mic pre • Output gain variable from -30dB to +10dB

ReviewsWorks great

I've used some other non-dbx gear, and this unit sounds far better. I used to run through a pre-amp, compressor, and EQ before going into the board; I can do it all with this one unit, and it sounds ... read more [+]better and takes up less space in my rack. I liked the first one so much I got two more. The pre-amp adds gain that's nice and clean, the compressor works well, and the enhancers actually do enhance (when used in moderation) rather than just making one's voice sound boomy or tinny. The de-esser works well, too. My only critique is that it would be nice if the compressor had the standard controls. Instead, you get "drive" (which equates to raising gain--in effect, lowering the compression threshold, as near as I can figure) and "density" (which seems to be the same thing as release on a normal compressor). These are OK, but I feel a bit hampered. Then again, maybe the good folks at dbx are making a good call to take most of the controls away from average Joes like me who would probably set them all wrong. Anyway, it provides nicely transparent shaping and has a helpful manual. close [-]

I just got the Dbx286a and I was suprised how good it sounded. At this price I was not expecting that. I was expecting it to be used on some guitar tracks and as an extra mic pre when needed. So far I... read more [+] have used it to record some acoustic guitar tracks and a male vocal and it has performed great on both. close [-]

Simon PicazoThe 286A sounds great! It's got a much better sound than I expected for this price and it's been super easy to use. If you want an inexpensive channel strip you should certainly consider this one, it's so easy on the budget. pre-amp!

I bought two of these along with some condensor mics. My plan was to give a more dynamic "leveled" sound to my stage. Ok first mistake was that I was using them in too tight of an environment (small... read more [+] stage) and i was using them too much. I had them as insert effects pre-monitor send or i was using them as preamps and i was getting a lot of ringing. And downright rude feedback attacks... so yea .. don't put heavy compression on a mic channel that is going fold back.. duh. :( November 18, 2009 Music Background: stuff What i ended up doing with these is I have them as a sub group insert on my vocal channels. This way the vocalists have clean exact monitors to listen to and the foh has a more dynamic fuller vocal sound. I group the lead and the back-up vocals to different units. Another nice use for these that ive found is as a stereo channel strip or dual channel effect on my DJ rig. The detail controls give nice subtle equalization and the gate/opener thing does some interesting auto fade stuff when you mess around with it. Also the compression is good on guitars/keboards/synths etc. ya know .. voice stuff. Its also good to have one of these installed in a minimal rack when you need a utility piece like phantom power or one channel of compression/gating. they get hot!!! makes sure you leave space around them. close [-] dbx 286A
