The 2-610 Belongs In Your Studio!

The Universal Audio 2-610 is a two-channel tube microphone preamplifier based on the legendary Universal Audio 610 modular console. Third in the Universal Audio Classics product line, the 2-610 follows the 1176LN Limiting Amplifier and Teletronix LA-2A Leveling Amplifier in Universal Audio's commitment to authentic analog recording technology. Universal Audio 2-610 Preamp at a Glance:
  • A classic design by Bill Putnam
  • Meticulously recreates the original
  • Ideal used alone or with a UA compressor
A classic design by Bill Putnam Designed by Bill Putnam, the Universal Audio 610 was among the first modular recording consoles. Early Universal Audio consoles were used in all of Putnam's studios including Universal Recording in Chicago and United Western in Los Angeles. Many prominent engineers such as Bruce Swedien began their careers in these studios with this classic rotary knob console. The UA 610 was particularly well noted for its preamplifier, and has left its mark on countless classic recordings from Sinatra to Pet Sounds to Van Halen to LA Woman. Meticulously recreates the original Universal Audio carefully modeled the UA 2-610 after the microphone amplifier section of the 610 console. Unlike many vintage "style" mic pres, the 2-610 is true to the design of its predecessor. Universal Audio's expertise in analog design translates into a classic tube preamplifier with all of the character of its vintage predecessor, yet designed for the requirements and rigor of the modern studio. Universal Audio has taken great care to preserve the quality and character of the original, while adding functionality with more boost/cut settings, phantom power, direct inputs and impedance controls. Ideal used alone or with a compressor The Universal Audio 2-610 Mic Pre is the perfect tool for tracking and ideal when used in conjunction with a Universal Audio compressor such as the 1176LN and Teletronix LA-2A. Whether you're running pure analog or seeking to enhance your digital audio workstation, the 2-610 will bring classic tube character to your recording. Curious about how variable impedances might help you in your studio? Check out this Tech Tip of the Day from our inSync weekly newsletter! Universal Audio 2-610 Preamp Features:
  • Two variable gain channels
  • Mic, Direct, and Hi-Z Inputs
  • Phantom Power
  • Polarity reverse
  • Variable Mic/HiZ impedance control
  • HF/LF shelf stepped EQ controls

The perfect pre

by Mike Petkau from Winnipeg, MB Canada

Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Touring musician, Songwriter
I'd gone through a bunch of different pre's, both tube and solid state, before landing the 2-610. My recordings have increased dramaticly in quality: they're warmer and the top end is much smoother.<... read more [+]br />
I like a lot of colour from my gear, and so if purity is what you're after, this thing ain't for you. But if you want to sound like the big boys, this is a very necessary step in that direction. close [-]

Quality Pre

When the Sweetwater rep was boasting about the 610, I thought to myself, yea ok, hearing is believing. When I first started recording with it, my first thought was that it increased the quality of my ... read more [+]tracks only slightly. But after a few months, I started to compare completed material with and without it, and the difference is huge. When coupled with a quality compressor, it delivers a warm up-front sound that sits in the mix well. Guitars, vocals, everything. If your a perfectionist and want to achieve that "commercial" sound, there is no upgrade after this. This piece of equipment will follow you for the rest of your recording career. close [-]

MY SOUND - Step 1

Just face it. You need a sweet pre amp with no noise. Step one would have to be the 2 -610. Do the math...

If your ears can't tell the difference, hire a studio engineer of any experience, and they will tell you that there is a significant improvement in audio that a great pre-amp will give you. He then pushes you aside and gropes at your set of beautiful knobs.

It will put the warmth back into your tin-like digital recording. Don't take my word for it. You need to touch this level of gear for yourself. If you don't have a store near you, spend a hundred bucks on some studio time at a facility with high end gear. Run your mix or an instrument thru it and judge for yourself which pieces of kit are right for you, before you buy something blind. It may be the best hundred bucks you spend before shelling out your thousands.
