Flexible Software

by Tom from USA

The Patchmix software that comes with this can be as confusing as others have said. That's the price you pay for the flexibility you get. It is *extremely* flexible. There are usually several ways to ... read more [+]do anything, and it takes some experimentation to tweak things so they work in a way that is intuitive for you. In Patchmix, you begin by creating mixer channels. Each channel's input can be an ASIO output from your DAW, a physical input from the breakout box, or a Windows source. Each channel's output is then mixed and routed to the main outs (which you can assign to any physical output) and the monitor outs. Furthermore, each channel can be tapped and sent to an ASIO input or another physical output. You can line up sends, perform direct monitoring, add effects and metering before and after any other send, etc.

While it did take effort to get comfortable, I've found it to have been very worthwhile.

It is a great product. close [-]

Hardware is Great! Software is so-so

This is an excellent professional grade converter! GUI is very confusing though...

A great pro soundcard for under $500.

- My raves:

Sound wise, I couldnt ask for more for the price. The AD/DA Converters used deliver in their quality and fidelity you can expect.

The available I/O options ar... read more [+]e just right for a small studio or mobile based recording setup. Not too little and not too much.

Mic preamps are VERY clean and high quality.

Versatility in desktop or mobile situations via a cardbus or PCI option of which the MicroDock can be used on both.

- My main gripes:

Included Patch Mix software is rather complicated with a non-user-friendly UI. It needs alot of studying and experimentation to get the kind of configurations you want.

No dedicated monitor output. Monitors have to be inserted via the Patchmix software and can be extremely confusing to do.

88.1 - 192KHz sample rates do not work for normal Windows sounds and can only playback if the sounds are recorded in the specific sampling rates. close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Mike Conyers
Tons of I/O, not to mention phenomenal A/D conversion (the same chipset used in the Digidesign 192io)? You won't find better bang for your buck!

Decent Performance, difficult to understand patchmix software, driver hell.

by John Bennett from San Francisco

Music Background: Post production sound mixer for films
Let's just say that mostly it performs like a champ. Sonically the reproduction of sound is great (the most important part). I use it with Sonar 6.0 and it performs well even with 200 tracks in play ... read more [+]without a glitch (I mix sound for movies).

My only complaint is that reload my drivers, which become regularly corrupted, to get any sound from the PCI DSP card.

Finally, the Patchmix software is not user friendly AT ALL, and could really use an interface reworking to make it much more comprehensive. Even a popup when you place your cursor over a particular insert would be nice to show (or allow you to chance) the current routing for that insert effect would help. EMU if you need help with this please contact me and I'd be glad to try to help you guys with this. close [-]
