Excellent replacement for crummy computer sound cards

If you only need two tracks, this is the USB audio interface you want. The 0404 is packed with lots of useful features, is absolutely dead-quiet and sounds great. Works at sample rates up to 192kHz, w ... read more [+]ith 16 or 24 bits. This thing is ready for studio-quality work.
A nice extra is the 1/8" stereo output jack, which is provided IN ADDITION to a pair of 1/4" TRS outputs. This makes it easy to hang that old pair of computer speakers off the unit as well as a good pair of monitors for A/B comparisons.
Setup was a snap. Drivers worked perfectly the first time.
My only complaint is the location of the power switch, hidden on the back panel UNDER the power jack. Bad engineer. No donut. :)
Don't be put off by the plastic case and knobs. This unit looks and feels solid. It should last a long time in a desktop setup (which is what it's designed for).
I'm very happy with my 0404, and would replace it immediately if lost. close [-]
Make sure you have Leopard drivers prior to install

The other plug ins I would suggest making sure they are Leopard compatible. I suppose this is the case for Vista use as well. Compatible drivers save you major pain. close [-]
ASIO not Vista-friendly yet, but a great unit for XP

I may raise the star count once the Vista drivers are ready, but ASIO under Cubase 4 glitches at pretty much anything under 20ms on my dual-core e6600 machine running Vista. Sa ... read more [+]me problem with my PCI 0404 so it has to be the drivers.
Under XP everything is fine and I can run about 7ms with no problems at all. Sound is marvelous, soft knee limiter is great for vocals. 5 stars there.
One other problem: no sound from my Johnson J-amp through the coaxial S/PDIF. Other sources work fine, as well as the J-amp with an optical converter. Emu didn't sound like they were much interested in fixing it though they may have along with several other S/PDIF issues as of firmware 6.02--haven't tried it yet.
All the current shipping Emu cards are new enough that solid Vista support should appear soon. Beta drivers are available but they made no difference. close [-]
0404 emu usb 2.0
by Scott from St. Louis

Music Background: recording engineer, student,
The unit has great converters. If you research it, you will find that they are the same converters that are used in some pretty nice I/O's, like RME. The mic pre's are very clear and have a musical so ... read more [+]und. The limiter is a nice feature. It works nice on the "just in case peaks." One real con that I came across is the latency selection. Though the unit does track at near zero which is great, the down side is setting it the other way, by this I mean for mixing on. You can set it super quick for tracking, but if you want it to mix on it won't work well. It only goes to 500ms. I had old sessions that I had to use my Zoom h4 to open because the EMU wouldn't hang with the session. Big bummer! Most I/O's go to at least 1024ms, not sure why this is capped off at 500ms. It's a great product for the money, works well with my laptop, but it's impossible to use more than a few plugins/vsti's with and my laptop is a dual-core with 3gigs of ram. My old m-audio and my Zoom h4 work way better in the mix side, but don't sound as good. close [-]
