My girlfriend wanted help picking out her first acoustic guitar. She learned on my brother's Martin (we both have DR's and my dad has some one he bought for 3 grand in the 70's). With our good history... read more [+] with Martin's, she had kinda made up her mind before shopping that she was going to get a Martin. I was a little worried about that because she said that her budget was no more than $500 and I wasn't sure if the Martin name would translate to that price range. Size was an issue and as such she wanted to look at LXM's, taylor baby's, etc... I wanted her to get a full size guitar of some sort, but she felt the dreadnaughts were a little uncomfortable for her 5'4" frame. We finally found this guitar at Best Buy of all places and I instantly loved it and so did she. The size was perfect and the sound was Martin through and through. We tried only guitars under 2 grand and this came in 2nd in our 4 trips to various guitar stores. The only one that beat it to my ears was a $1600 dollar Martin at American Music. And keep in mind that these tests included mostly Martin's and Taylor's so thats saying something.September 2, 2009 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Live Sound Engineer, Hobbyist Guitarist, Gigging Bassist The sound is great. It's has the pleasing bottom and midrange warmth that is common to all Martin's. Where this guitar really excells though is on the top end. Not over sparkly but has bite in a very even warm sort of way. It's hard to describe without hearing it but once I played it at home for a while I was making new songs and trying new things that I'd never thought of with my DR. The sound was just quality but with a slightly different character that was very inspiring to me. I would recommend this guitar to any guitar owner, Martin or not, because the sound is just killer, the HPL stuff is supposedly super durable and gives the sound a pleasing character, it's slightly smaller, it's a joy to play, and it doesn't break the bank. Definitely recommended, especially to any recording guitarist who wants a new and unique sounding guitar. close [-]
