Why would I want a handheld recorder?

The primary reason handheld recorders have become so popular is that you can use them just about anywhere to record anything - a band practice, a recital or concert, a quick demo of a song, sampling in the field, a meeting - the list goes on. The first thing you'll notice about all these recorders is how small they are. You can literally hold them in the palm of your hand! They're also really easy to use with a minimum of setup necessary. Just point them at the source, press "record," and go.

One thing that surprises many people about the current crop of handheld recorders is their audio quality. They sound amazingly good - much better than you might expect for the price. Part of that sound quality is due to the fact that these recorders have no moving parts to generate noise.

How many tracks can I record?

Most handheld recorders offer stereo (2-track) recording modes. Some, such as the Boss Micro BR and Zoom H4, also function as 4-track recorders. These units allow you to record two tracks and play back four tracks simultaneously. In addition, the Micro BR features a total of 32 "virtual tracks," which means you can record several different takes and then decide which one to keep.

How much recording time is possible?

Handheld recorders store data on CompactFlash or Secure Digital cards. These widely available cards offer an amazing amount of recording time in a small package. The total recording time available depends on the recording format you choose. For uncompressed CD-quality recording, you can store as much as six hours of stereo audio on a 4GB card. Most of these units also allow you to record in MP3 mode. At the most economical settings, a single card can handle as much as 63 hours of audio!

It's easy to load and change memory cards on these recorders. Simply pop one into the slot and you're ready to record.

What type of mics do handheld recorders use?

Most of the handheld recorders available today have built-in stereo microphones. They work remarkably well and make recording as easy as "point and shoot." If you want to use external microphones, you can. Different recorders have different input types - XLR, minijack, etc. Some models even have phantom power for condenser mics.

You can also plug a guitar, bass, keyboard, or other line-level source into the line inputs on these recorders.

How long will the batteries last?

The big advantage of handheld recorders is portability. All of them can run on battery power, with anywhere from three to six hours of recording time possible. Most use standard AA alkaline batteries. You can also use rechargeable batteries.

How do I transfer audio files to my computer?

After recording, it's easy to transfer audio files from your handheld recorder to a computer for further processing or storage. You just plug the recorder into your computer's USB port and it will appear on the desktop.
