Roger Nichols
Recording Guide

On November 8, 1995 Sweetwater Sound (with the support of Rane and Alesis) was pleased to present a recording seminar with the legendary engineer/producer Roger Nichols. Roger has been touring with Steely Dan for the last 2 years and engineered all of their albums. His list of album credits is immense with artists from Gloria Estefan to John Denver, Frank Sinatra, Rickie Lee Jones and Placido Domingo. Roger has three Grammy awards and six Grammy nominations.

During his seminar at Sweetwater he addressed a full house of employees and customers. He passed on recording hints and techniques and handed out a "Recording Guide" that he had developed. We are pleased to present this guide to you via the Web with his permission.

It takes more than just plugging in a microphone and pushing a record button to make a good recording.

Every link in the chain is as important as the ones around it.

The following is a rough outline of the things you need to think about when recording and mixing a project. The explanations are short as they are only meant to jog your memory.
