Is there anyone, anywhere who doesn’t know the name Mackie? Who doesn’t know that the company produces some of the very best cutting edge studio and stage products ever designed? Their latest innovation, the much anticipated PPM Professional Powered Mixer Series, was introduced recently at the NAB Convention to a hugely receptive audience. These new Mackie professional-quality, high-performance powered mixers have been designed specifically for local and regional club bands, rehearsal rooms and general gigs, for installation as part of small to medium club PA systems, houses of worship, and in corporate AV applications. Mackie has actually introduced five models of the PPM Professional Powered Mixer Series that include three mono models: The 406M ($699 list) with 500 watts of power into 2 ohms (two 250W FR Series power amps) and six mic/line channels; The 408M ($799 list) with 500 watts into 2 ohms (two 250W FR Series power amps) with eight mic/line channels (two channels with mic plus dual line inputs); and finally the 808M ($899 list) which sports a full 1200 Watts into 2 ohms (two 600W FR Series power amps) with eight mic/line channels (two channels with mic plus dual line inputs).

Not forgetting stereo applications, Mackie also introduced two stereo PPM models: The 408S ($899 list) with 500 watts into 2 ohms (two 250W FR Series power amps) and 8 mic/line channels (two channels with mic plus stereo line inputs), and then the “big daddy” 808S (pictured here — $999 list) with a whopping 1200 watts into 2 ohms (two 600W FR Series power amps) and eight mic/line channels (two channels with mic plus stereo line inputs).

Do these Mackie powered mixers boast some impressive features? You bet! Just a few of the key features include: Low-noise, high-headroom Mackie special-design mic preamps with improved RF rejection plus mic and line inputs are standard on all channels (Mackie’s mic preamps have always been among the very best performers in the business, particularly at their price points). All 8-channel models have dual line inputs plus an XLR mic input on channels 7 and 8 and each PPM sports a one-piece custom diecast heat sink for maximum heat dispertion. There are TRS insert jacks on channels 1 through 6 for insertion of external signal processors, plus an Input Level Set control with LED and +50dB gain range (a Mackie exclusive) and a 3-band active EQ on each channel with frequencies set at critical musical points.

There’s more (come on, with Mackie, that’s almost a given!): Built right into each PPM model is a 32-bit EMAC custom digital effects processor with 16 great sounding effects, two adjustable parameter controls and special EFX Wide switch for spatial enhancement, meaning each unit is fully capable of producing the most popular digital effects right out of the box! Also included is a 9-band monitor graphic EQ with 15dB cut/boost and 12-segment LED ladder on all models, plus a 9-band main graphic EQ with 15dB cut/boost and 12-segment LED ladder on mono models (9-band true stereo main graphic EQ on all stereo models). A convenient power amp routing switch selects both power amps for mains or one power amp for main and one power amp for monitoring. A Break switch mutes channels 1 – 6 on all models (this keeps feedback from generating and “bar poets” from sneaking up to your mic when you’re on break). Two independent 75Hz Rumble Reduction (low cut) filters are standard, one for main and one for monitor. What’s more, there are Tape/CD input and output RCA jacks with input level control on each model, as well as dual speaker outputs on each channel.

For durability and super long life, each PPM model is housed in a high-impact custom injection-molded case. A custom-design rear-panel heat sink provides extra thermal protection which also assures users that their investment will operate perfectly for many years to come (hey, Mackie doesn’t build any disposable mixers!).
